Many Notre Dame fans didn’t show patience in waiting a week or so for Duke transfer quarterback Riley Leonard to announce his commitment to the Fighting Irish. If you thought that was a long wait, then you may not remember Guerby Lambert‘s recruitment.

It seemed pretty clear late in the summer that the massive offensive tackle from West Roxbury (Mass.) Catholic Memorial would pick Notre Dame. It was just a matter of time. But it took a couple of months for him to announce his decision, which he did in favor of Marcus Freeman‘s program on Sept. 19.

And on National Signing Day Dec. 20, Lambert put pen to paper and officially became a member of the Irish football program.

Notre Dame offered Lambert back in March 2022 for Pot of Gold Day, and it was clear that the Irish were going to be a big competitor in his recruitment. But outside of trips to see the local Boston College Eagles, Lambert never visited any colleges until the summer before his senior year.

The 6-6, 290-pounder took officials to Notre Dame, Boston College, Ohio State and Harvard — in that order — and despite the Irish getting the first visit (which can sometimes be a bad thing as the visit “high” wears off), Freeman and Co. eventually won out for the elite prospect.

“The opportunities for life after football there are endless,” Lambert said to On3’s Hayes Fawcett about picking the Irish. “They have an amazing coach staff, a great engineering program (which is the major I want to get into), and overall faith. I prayed over this decision every day and I feel that God is telling me Notre Dame.”

Lambert ranks as the nation’s No. 37 overall player and No. 4 offensive tackle according to the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking.

On3’s own rankings are slightly higher on Lambert than the industry average, listing him as the No. 22 prospect and No. 4 tackle in the land. Both rankings have him as the top player in Massachusetts.

Lambert is from the same school that produced Notre Dame rising sophomore Boubacar Traore.

It would be a tall order to ask Lambert to become a Day 1 starter at Notre Dame, but the Irish lost both of their offensive tackles from the 2023 season with Blake Fisher and Joe Alt declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft. It remains to be seen if Notre Dame will dip into the portal to add another offensive tackle, but Lambert has the physical tools to produce in his first year, although he won’t enroll until the summer.
