After a tough test in Brooklyn, N.Y., Notre Dame men’s basketball is back in South Bend and ready to take on Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday. The Irish are looking to get back over .500, and they might get a key player back from injury in sophomore forward Kebba Njie.

Njie, a Penn State transfer, suffered a right hand injury two days before Notre Dame’s regular-season opener against Niagara. He was seen before that game with a soft cast or a brace on his hand and has not played since, but Irish head coach Micah Shrewsberry said Njie could return — and implied that he’s expected to return — against the Hawks.

“Barring any setbacks, we hope to have him here tomorrow and beyond,” Shrewsberry said Tuesday.

Shrewsberry also noted that in addition to rehabbing his hand, Njie practiced with the team in the days leading up to Wednesday’s matchup. He is the only current Notre Dame player who has experience working under Shrewsberry’s leadership, which the first-year Irish coach has pointed out several times.

Njie’s return would give the Irish a strong interior presence that they haven’t had in their first four games.

“We do need him,” Shrewsberry said. “We need his voice. We need his rebounding, his ability to get us easy basket in the paint. … He’s probably our most important defensive piece that we’ve played without, so we’re anxious to get him back. We’ll put him in a bubble here in the next couple days and hope nobody bumps into him.”

Here’s how to watch and stream Notre Dame’s matchup with Maryland Eastern Shore on Fubo.

Matchup notables

• Maryland Eastern Shore competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, or the MEAC. The Hawks have a win over Penn, who has beaten traditional Big East powerhouse Villanova.

• With Njie out, Notre Dame has started senior forward Matt Zona at the five. He splits time with freshman forward Carey Booth, who is second on the team with 9.8 points per game. Booth’s natural position is the four, and Njie’s presence will allow him to play at that spot.

• Freshman guard Markus Burton leads Notre Dame in points per game — by far — with 19.5. The Irish’s leading rebounder is junior guard J.R. Konieczny, who is coming off back-to-back double-doubles in Brooklyn, with 6.0.
