The final week of the Notre Dame women’s basketball regular season is here. The Irish cannot claim even a share of the ACC title, but they can position themselves nicely for the upcoming conference tournament with a pair of wins over teams currently seated ahead of them in the league standings.

There are five ACC teams ranked in the Week 17 Associated Press poll that came out Monday. Notre Dame moved up two places to No. 17. The Irish face No. 5 Virginia Tech on Thursday and No. 22 Louisville on Sunday. Both games are at home inside Purcell Pavilion.

Virginia Tech assured itself of at least a share of the ACC regular season championship by beating North Carolina yesterday. The Hokies will take a 10-game winning streak into this week’s game at Notre Dame. If they beat the Irish, they will win the ACC title outright.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, wants to sneak into the top four in the standings to assure itself of a double-bye in Greensboro. As it stands, the Irish would be the fifth seed in the tournament behind No. 1 Virginia Tech, No. 2 Syracuse, No. 3 NC State and No. 4 Louisville.

Notre Dame lost to Syracuse twice and one time each against NC State and Louisville. Games against the top teams within a conference slate are the ones that make or break a team’s season. So far, they’ve broken the Irish. But the next two games make up as good of a chance as any at salvation. The Irish control their own destiny in terms of making matters easier on themselves in next week’s ACC bracket.
