COLUMBUS — Begin making plans for the first two game days of the season, Ohio State fans.

The Buckeyes know their first two opponents will be schools from the Mid-American Conference. Now they know their kickoff times for those two early-season matchups inside Ohio Stadium, the program announced Thursday afternoon.

They will kick off their season against Akron on Aug. 31 in a game that will begin at 3:30 and be televised on CBS. A week later, the Buckeyes will host Western Michigan in primetime, a game that will kick off at 7:30 on Big Ten Network.

Of course, the Buckeyes are already heavily favored over Akron; they opened last week as a historically large 50.5-point favorite for that matchup. The spread for the Western Michigan game will also be huge.

Ohio State hasn’t lost to a team currently in the MAC — or an in-state school — since Sept. 5, 1894 when the Buckeyes fell 12-6 to Buchtel College, now known as Akron. That was a 1-0 Buchtel team in a year Ohio State went 6-5 overall.

This year’s Ohio State team, 131 years removed from that loss, should be much, much better. And the hype for what this season could be in Columbus will reach its peak ahead of the first two games of the season, the opening two opportunities for Buckeyes fans to fill up the Horseshoe and see a loaded 2024 Ohio State squad.
