Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players and Ohio State coaches and staff members themselves. Today’s guest is former Buckeyes quarterback Tate Martell, who is looking for one more shot in college football after leaving Miami.

The journey has been a wild one for Tate Martell.

Whatever happens next, the former Ohio State quarterback knows the road is coming to an end.

After transferring from the Buckeyes program in January of 2019, Martell is on the move again and officially entering the NCAA transfer portal. He’s leaving the University of Miami with the hope of finding a new place for his football future, a final place for one last push toward the fulfillment of the lofty expectations that have followed Martell since he was a high school freshman.

The only thing that has followed more closely has the been drama, oftentimes the result of Martell’s own actions. His social-media bluster led to self-inflicted challenges more than once, and his supreme confidence in his abilities has led to public rebuttals from all corners of the sports world, including fellow athletes and sports media personalities who’ve relished in his shortcomings.

Through it all, Tate Martell has insisted he just wanted to play football, to be the quarterback he believes he can be. So now he’s trying to do that again, and hopes to do it without the theatrics, without the drama and without the hype. Martell had to hit rock-bottom in order to right the direction he’s heading. Now he’s eager to put the new, better version of himself forward for college coaches to see. He admits fully that he’s not handled the adversity he’s faced well enough.

What would Martell say to a younger version of himself? What does his daily grind look like now that he’s preparing for another chance to play quarterback? What would he think about playing a different position?

The former three-time state champ and national Gatorade Player of the Year joined Birminology to talk about those things and more.
