2023 safety target John Slaughter makes one-handed interception look easy

Southaven (Miss.) safety John Slaughter was impressive last month at the Under Armour Next camp in Atlanta. He returned to the Peach State for last weekend’s Pylon 7v7 event to try and continue his climb up the On3 2023 rankings and, again, he did not disappoint.
The On3 consensus three-star and the 25th-ranked safety in On3’s position rankings made a jaw-dropping, Sportscenter Top 10 level play on the goal line, chasing down a crossing route and intercepting the pass with one hand.
The 6-foot-3, 192 pound defensive back has unofficially visited Oxford four times since last summer, including a trip for a game in October.
He made the trek to Ole Miss last summer for Lane Kiffin’s elite camp and earned an offer on the spot from co-defensive coordinator Chris Partridge.

“It was my first camp ever,” Slaughter said. “After one-on-one drills were done, coach (Chris) Partridge told me to stay a little bit longer. …Then we went on a tour and I was offered a little bit later. They really liked how I moved during the camp,” Slaughter said. “Coach Q (Quincy Casimir) and Coach Buddy (Brosky) said that my build and skill set fits perfectly with what they want to do defensively.”
According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM), Ole Miss has a big lead for the in-state prospect. The Rebels are currently in the lead at 83.3%. Mississippi State and Alabama are next at 8.1% with Kentucky sitting at <1%.
RPM was released to the public in December. The On3 engineering group teamed up with Spiny.ai to create the industry’s first algorithm and machine learning-based product to predict where athletes will attend college.
It factors in machine learning, expert predictions, social sentiment, visits, and historical trends. However, expert predictions are still a big piece of the RPM equation.
