Charlie Weis Jr. to call plays as Ole Miss announces College Football Playoff staff
Hours before the penultimate College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings are released new Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding announced his staff for the postseason run and it includes a key component to the offense.
Current offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, Jr. will remain with the Rebels through their CFP run as the play caller. An announcement that should soften whatever blow the CFP selection committee might have handed Ole Miss in the wake of Lane Kiffin’s departure to LSU on Sunday.
Also remaining for the offense is quarterbacks coach Joe Judge, running backs coach Kevin Smith and offensive line coach John Garrison.
Ben Garrett of the Ole Miss Spirit reported earlier on Tuesday that Garrison was courted by Kiffin to join his staff at LSU but will remain with the Rebels beyond this season.
Moments after Ole Miss revealed its CFP staff Kiffin released a statement of his own regarding Weis returning for the playoff run. It has been reported that Weis has signed a term sheet with the Tigers and it appears will be heading to Baton Rouge as the new offensive coordinator for LSU once the Rebels season comes to an end.

“With the playoff committee releasing updated rankings tonight, I wanted it to be known that after conversations with LSU, we are allowing Charlie to return to Ole Miss to coach the team during the playoffs,” Kiffin’s statement read. “I’ve already made the committee aware of this and I’m hopeful this decision will allow Ole Miss to receive the highest ranking possible because these great players are very deserving of that. I’m excited that Charlie will be back to help coach the greatest team in the history of Ole Miss.”
Weis joined Kiffin’s staff in 2022, replacing Jeff Lebby who took the offensive coordinator job at Oklahoma following the 2021 season.
Golding retained all of his defensive staff which includes co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Bryan Brown, defensive line coach Randall Joyner, safeties coach Wes Neighbors III and special teams / nickelbacks coach Jake Schoonover.
