Deuce Alexander is making the spectacular look routine for Ole Miss
Lane Kiffin in his six Ole Miss seasons has made a habit of mining competing rosters for underutilized playmakers and turning them into superstars.
Jordan Watkins, who’s in line to make his rookie NFL debut for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, is a good example.
Kiffin seems to have done it again with Deuce Alexander.
“What we’d seen on [his Wake Forest] film, they didn’t throw him the ball very much,” Kiffin said during fall camp in August. “But we could see on film a guy that, if we had him, how much we’d want to give him the ball.”
Alexander made a highlight-reel catch worthy of the SportsCenter Top 10 in front of a primetime audience Saturday at Georgia.
The No. 5-ranked Rebels (6-0, 3-0 SEC) lead the No. 9 Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1), 35-26, as college football’s Game of the Week heads to the fourth quarter.
Ole Miss has scored on all five of its offensive possessions, a first for Georgia under title-winning head coach Kirby Smart. Smart entered the day 1-2 in his Georgia career against Ole Miss.
Ole Miss on its fifth scoring drive faced second-and-15 on its own 30. Red-hot Trinidad Chambliss went to Alexander, who made a circus catch between two defenders for 32 yards.
Ole Miss scored eight plays later to cap its fourth drive of 10 plays or more in the game. Chambliss is 12 for 26 for 262 yards and a touchdown. He’s also the Rebels’ leading rusher with nine carries for 42 yards and two additional scores.
De’Zhaun Stribling has a team-high 96 receiving yards, 75 of which came on the Rebels’ only single-digit drive through their first five.

Alexander had 60 or more yards in just two of 12 games for the Demon Deacons last season. He went for at least 64 in four of Ole Miss’ first five games.
Alexander led Ole Miss in receptions (4) and receiving yards (94, a new career-high) against Tulane, when he a similar ridiculous catch for the Rebels.
Alexander is almost making it a habit.
“We knew Deuce was explosive,” Kiffin said. “You could see him in a wide open offense to make all those plays where we can just see what he did in their system.”
Alexander was one of five transfer wideouts Ole Miss signed in the NCAA Transfer Portal. The Rebels finished with the nation’s No. 3 overall class.
Alexander played two seasons at Wake Forest, including a redshirt year as a freshman. He appeared in 14 games in all. Twelve came last season. Alexander finished with 36 catches for 400 yards and two touchdowns.
“That’s my guy, man,” Alexander said of Austin Simmons, who made his first significant appearance in weeks at Georgia. “I came in the portal and we built a great relationship when I came on my visit. Went out to eat and it continued when I got here. We continue to build a relationship every day. We talk throughout the offense — spots he wants me in. Great relationship with him.”
