Ole Miss football worked in shells as the Rebels round out the third full week of fall camp practices. The Rebels open the 2025-26 season on August 30 against Georgia State.

“It’s a really exciting group for me,” Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding said of his unit after practice on Thursday. “It’s a really good combination of young returners and transfer players. I think they’re doing a great job of jelling right now.

“Obviously there’s no depth chart for us right now. But we’ve got some guys competing that are really taking the right steps. It’s a really good mesh of guys. If we can get 25 to 28 guys, that’s normally the number we’re looking for to playing winning football. We’ve got a lot of battles right now.”

Ole Miss announced a contract extension for Golding on Thursday.

Golding is in his third season as Rebel defensive coordinator. Ole Miss in Year 1 under Golding improved from the 70s in total defense to the 30s. The Rebels set new school records for sacks and tackles for loss last season, among other historic accomplishments.

“From a front standpoint, I don’t think we’re going to take a step back from last year,” Golding said. “It’s going to be some different names, but, obviously, the big thing on those guys [is] they’ve been in the system. We’re going to have some guys that y’all know their name already, been big-time recruits. They’re going to have to have big years for us. They’ve been practicing really well.”
