A little over a month has passed since the 2025 NFL Draft and Jaxson Dart became another first round pick for the Ole Miss football program. He went to the New York Giants as the 25th overall pick.

Dart has gone through rookie camp and is now in the middle of OTAs (organized team activities) before preseason camp begins in July. With some downtime he was able to take in a New York Yankees – Boston Red Sox game on Friday, getting the chance to see his favorite team growing up.

A kid from Utah who then played college football in Los Angeles and then Oxford explained how the Yankees became his team and the tie in for his dog’s name while visiting the YES announce booth during the third inning of the Yankees 9-6 win.

“My dad used to do some business (in New York City) and when he would come out he loved to take me,” Dart said. “He was kind of the OG Yankee fan in our family. Kind of followed his way with that and ever since then I’ve fallen in love with the team, the organization and had to name my dog ‘Bronx.'”

Dart wore No. 2 throughout his career, which was a nod to Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter. He now wears No. 6 with the Giants after admitted getting No. 2 was going to be an expensive transaction with teammate and cornerback Deonte Banks.

The Giants and Dart came to an agreement on his rookie contract last month with the latter signing it on May 30. The deal is for four years and worth $16.9 million with a $8.9 million signing bonus, according to NFL insider Ian Rappaport.

“I was hoping (the Giants would draft me),” Dart said. “How it all played out, this was the place that I really wanted to be. I felt like through my 30 visits, the whole draft process, the relationship that I developed with the coaching staff and the whole organization was just kind of special I felt like. Being here and being able to play for these coaches and this organization and this city is truly a blessing.”

Dart’s rookie season with the Giants is one that is expected to be spent learning from veteran quarterback Russell Wilson.

The rest of the quarterback room includes veteran Jamies Winston and Tommy DeVito. The expectation is for Dart to not be used much this upcoming season, if at all, and learn all he can behind Wilson and Winston.

Ever the competitor Dart is not shying away from trying to force the issue of him getting some playing time in 2025, but is also aware his role will be different than the past three years at Ole Miss.

“I think when you come into a situation like this, first of all I’m in a super special position. To be able to learn from guys like Russ, (Winston) and Tommy,” Dart said. “Guys who have competed at the highest level, Russ winning a Super Bowl, and to kind of pick their brains each and every day has been awesome for me, especially for how young I am.

“My focus right now is trying to develop each and every day and do whatever I can to make the team better. I just want to win. So, I can’t stand losing and I’m going to do whatever I can to make that happen.”

The bright lights of New York City and its imposing media can sometimes be intimidating to a player when they arrive. When asked if the that might make him nervous Dart gave a very confident two-word answer.

“Absolutely not.”
