New York Giants QB Jaxson Dart opens up rookie camp with a new number and a new snap count

The NFL rookie camps are firing up this week and for New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart that involves adapting to a lot of new changes.
Starting off Dart is no longer wearing No. 2, which he donned for three years as the Ole Miss starting quarteraback. The Giants revealed jersey numbers for all their draft picks with Dart now sporting No. 6 when camp opened up on Friday.
When the jersey numbers were unveiled it also came with a caveat of subject to change. Based off Dart’s post-practice comments the disclaimer might come into play.
“I’m going to come to a final decision here soon,” Dart said when asked if the number was permanent. “I’m going to have to look at the pictures and see if I like myself in a six.”
All tongue-and-cheek aside regarding the new number he touched on what it meant to be wearing a Giants jersey. Former Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning made No. 10 synonymous as the Giants eventually retired it in 2021.
Former Rebels tight end Evan Engram was another first round draft pick by the Giants during the 2017 NFL Draft.
“It’s been surreal to this point,” Dart added. “Was talking to Abdul (Carter). It kind of just hit us for the first time. Being out here wearing this jersey. It’s an amazing privilege. We definitely hold it in high regard.”

As for Dart’s performance in his first NFL practice he completed eight of 10 passes in 7-on-7 drills with the two passes being drops by the intended receiver, according to Giants reporter Connor Hughes who was among the media that took in the opening practice of rookie camp.
Of course it is hard to take away anything from the first day of a practice such as this and the playbook is going to be very vanilla. But Dart acknowledge the transition is going to take a little time going from the Ole Miss playbook he knew front to back for three years to an entirely new system.
Most notably the change in snap count, going from the clap that garnered some social media attention after Dart’s time on Jon Gruden’s QB Camp last month to a verbal cadence.
“It’s been super fun,” Dart said. “Quite honestly it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do and I’ve always kind of practiced it on my own kind of just messing around with buddies. I think it’s always a little bit of a transition. It really goes for anybody going from the college level to the NFL level. Cadence is different no matter where you’ve been at. You’re always going to have a bit of a learning curve.”
