Ole Miss slips in fourth edition of the College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings

The center of the college football universe might be Starkville this weekend but not so much for the Egg Bowl itself, though it should be for Ole Miss

Tuesday saw the fourth edition of this season’s College Football Playoff rankings released and Ole Miss at No. 7. That is down a spot after Oregon jumped the Rebels following its win over Southern California this past Saturday. The Rebels were on their second and final bye week of the season.

Friday against Mississippi State (5-6, 1-6 SEC) brings a lot of CFP implications to the table. A win over the Bulldogs give Ole Miss (10-1, 6-1) its first 11-win regular season in program history and should lock up the program’s first CFP bid.

But what if Lane Kiffin departs the team after six years to go to either Florida or LSU? What happens to the Rebels then? That is the big question the CFP committee is going to have to take into account come the final rankings on December 7. Though really that question might get answered next Tuesday if Kiffin is gone before the fifth edition of CFP rankings are released prior to the conference championships played next weekend.

This week’s bracket would see the Rebels host Alabama in a first round game on either December 19 or 20.
