Ole Miss pitcher Will McCausland selected by Cleveland Guardians 2025 MLB Draft

Another blow to the Ole Miss pitching staff for next season took place during the second day of the MLB Draft.
Will McCausland was selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the seventh round as the 222nd overall pick. Slot value is set at $256,000.
He is the third Ole Miss pitcher taken in this year’s draft, among those who could return. Mason Morris was drafted in the third round on Sunday and Grand Canyon transfer Grant Richardson was drafted in the sixth round by the Athletics.
McCausland joins infielder Luke Hill who was selected in the fourth round by the Guardians.
This season McCausland finished with a 3-1 record and 4.32 earned run average. In 41.2 innings worked he recorded 55 strikeouts and allowed 24 runs — 20 earned — off 42 hits. McCausland issued 11 walks, as well.
In speaking with Rebel Grove last month Ole Miss pitching coach Joel Mangrum noted that McCausland informed the staff that if his number was not reached or the round he has in mind that it was “really important” that he would come back.

What the number or round is was not divulged by Mangrum but hard to say a top 10 round selection is not in that window.
“He’s another one, was top three in our league, especially in SEC play and fastball miss in the zone,” Mangrum said of McCausland. “That’s things that Major League organizations really, really like. You know, he’s been durable, he’s pitched a lot of in, he’s logged a lot of innings and he pitched a key spots for us, and I think most of the 30 organizations like SEC arms that can get swing and miss in the zone and can log innings and they’re pitching in big spots.”
Fellow Ole Miss pitchers Riley Maddox and Mason Nichols were also drafted on Monday. Maddox was selected by the Washington Nationals in the eighth round as the 231s overall pick ($239,900) and Nichols went to the Tampa Bay Rays in the ninth round as the 267th overall pick ($203,900).
Ace Hunter Elliott is still undrafted as of this story being published.
