The final week of the regular season is here and Ole Miss gets it started against Mississippi State on Thursday in the annual Egg Bowl.

On Tuesday the latest round of College Football Playoff rankings were released and Ole Miss had a similar drop to one it had on Sunday in the Associated Press and Coaches Polls.

Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3 Southeastern Conference) just remained inside the Top 20, dropping six spots to No. 20 after its loss to Arkansas last Saturday night in Fayetteville.

Obviously the playoffs are long gone and so is a New Year’s Six bowl berth for Ole Miss with three losses, but the top-20 ranking is still significant.

LSU moved up to No. 5 and will probably find itself inside the final four after this weekend with a win over Texas A&M and the fact No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan face off.

If somehow the Tigers beat No. 1 Georgia in next weekend’s SEC Championship game then the SEC more than likely gets two teams into the playoffs. A close-ish loss might also help the Tigers chances but a blowout would not.

This is where Ole Miss securing an Egg Bowl win to secure a nine-win season comes in handy.

When it comes to the SEC selection process for its bowl games it goes like this, no it does not need abacus but comes close to.

Ole Miss has been a heavy favorite to be the SEC’s team for the Citrus Bowl in Orlando all season long. To do so requires the SEC to get two teams into the playoffs.

After the CFP selection process and the New Year’s six bowl games that are not part of the playoff that year, then the Citrus Bowl gets the next available SEC team.

Tennessee was looking good to somehow maybe slide back into the CFP, leaving LSU and Alabama left for the Sugar and Orange Bowls. But the Vols got hammered at South Carolina and fell to No. 10 in the CFP rankings.

If LSU does not get into the CFP and snags a NY6 bowl along with Alabama and the Vols are left out of that it would make them Citrus Bowl bound. This puts Ole Miss looking at maybe a trip back to Tampa in the ReliaQuest Bowl or possibly to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl.

Unfortunately for Ole Miss they only have one more game to improve its standing. Losing out on the chance for a 10-win regular season makes things tricky in terms of figuring out the Rebels postseason fate.

But first things first, beat Mississippi State and let the rest sort itself out.
