Ryan Moerman's injury creates shakeup for remainder of Ole Miss' stay in SEC Tournament

HOOVER, Ala. — Ole Miss was in a glass case of emotions two innings into its game against Arkansas on Friday in the Southeastern Conference Tournament and nearly saw its outfield be completely altered.
Center fielder Isaac Humphreys and right fielder Ryan Moerman went after a ball hit by Razorbacks’ Cam Kozeal and then commenced to collide, creating a hush over the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium crowd.
Humphrey stayed down but Moerman managed to get up and hobble to the outfield wall to throw the ball in while Kozeal completed the little league home run for Arkansas second and last run of the day.
After getting checked out by trainers and Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco, Humphrey stayed in but Moerman exited the game.
There was not much to report postgame in terms of an update on Moerman’s status.
“Obviously a scary moment for everybody, especially when you get two guys go down,” Bianco said. “You never know. Bumped heads, concussion, and all kinds of injuries. But at first, we weren’t sure if it was some type of head injury, just because Ryan complained of his right knee, and then as he got up and started to move around it was his left knee. I think it’s one of those, it’s pretty traumatic, guys running full speed in the moment, and he actually came out of the game because they just wanted to really check him out because they weren’t really sure what was going on.”

Bianco also noted that Humphrey “jarred” his shoulder and right arm, which bothered him the rest of the game though he played through it.
Ole Miss takes on LSU in the second game of Saturday’s semifinal round at approximately 1:30 or 2 p.m. CT. With less than a 24-hour turnaround the status of Moerman for the game is probably leaning towards doubtful. How the night goes and if Humphrey gets any stiffness in his neck or arm will determine his availability, more than likely.
Hayden Federico replaced Moerman in right field for the rest of Friday’s game, making a couple key outs during the afternoon. He also entered the game late against Florida, replacing Mitchell Sanford in left field. Bianco did not say that Federico will be the replacement on Saturday but gave a vote of confidence if the true freshman is.
“He’s terrific. He’s a guy that we brought in last night for a defensive replacement. We’re not worried about that part of it at all,” Bianco said. “But you’re talking about guys that — Moreman batted fifth today in the lineup, and Humphrey has batted against right-handers, he’s batted in the middle of the lineup. You’re talking about guys that started just about every day in the outfield. I think they’re going to be okay. I don’t think it’s anything super serious, but it was a collision, and tomorrow is less than 24 hours away, so we’ll see. We’ll get back to the hotel and see where they’re at.”
