Trinidad Chambliss expected to start for Ole Miss vs. LSU as Austin Simmons injury recovery continues

According to Pete Nakos and Chris Low of On3, Ole Miss will start Trinidad Chambliss at quarterback vs. LSU on Saturday. Lane Kiffin’s starter, Austin Simmons, continues to recovery from an ankle injury.
“Trinidad Chambliss has started to get some Heisman Trophy attention for his performance with Simmons sidelined with the ankle injury,” Nakos wrote. “Sources have told On3 that Simmons is not 100% yet but is better than last week.”
Chambliss has thrown for 719 yards and four touchdowns this season, while totaling 195 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He hasn’t turned the ball over and is completing nearly 68 percent of his passes. Chambliss is No. 1 in the SEC in yards per pass attempt (11.6) and No. 2 in passer rating.
He will face an LSU defense that looks like one of the strongest units in the country so far this season. Defensive coordinator Blake Baker is one of the best defensive play callers in college football and he’s in his second season.
“Second year in a system defensively helps a lot of times,” Kiffin said on Monday. “They’ve improved their personnel also. You’ve got three or four starting defensive linemen who are portal guys. Three of the four in the secondary are portal guys. They’ve done a great job with that. They’re heavily financially invested into the portal and made that decision. That’s no secret. Coach [Brian] Kelly’s talked about that, how much money they’ve spent, and it shows.

“Those three guys that were heavily recruited and probably the three most expensive portal DBs in the market and they got them all. So, they did a great job with that, and now they’re coaching them really well and they’re playing great.”
The Rebels are on a bye next week before Washington State and back-to-back SEC road trips to Georgia and Oklahoma. That gives time for Simmons to get healthy before the brunt of SEC play.
“We’ll have to evaluate (Simmons’) health and then make a decision,” Kiffin said earlier this week. “Today was just a walkthrough, so not enough to evaluate. But at 100% he was our starting quarterback. But we don’t know what percentage he’ll be.”
Kickoff between Ole Miss and LSU on Saturday is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
