Ole Miss opened its 2025 season with a bang as quarterback Austin Simmons was perfect on his opening drive, hitting tight end Dae’Quan Wright for a 38-yard touchdown pass. The Rebels went up 7-0 in the first quarter.

Going into the game, head coach Lane Kiffin was high on his group of tight ends going into the season. Wright got the first touchdown pass from Simmons as the starter.

“I think our tight ends and receivers are going to take off right where we where last year. Number one passing offense in the country. …It’s kind of crazy what we’ve gotten used to around here,” Kiffin said this week. “Just looking at the stuff from last year. There was a stat over the last five years and in the five years we’ve out-gained every offense in the country. More than even Ohio State. To even come close to that these guys are going to have to do a really good job and the quarterback is going to have to play really well.”

Kiffin is also high on Ole Miss’ wideouts. The first pass from Simmons also went to Wright then he hit Penn State transfer Harrison Wallace III.

“We actually did a study on that. Put all the top five receivers of every year and we’ve had really, really good receiver years here. Some really good players,” Kiffin said Thursday. “So, I don’t know that it is, yet. Because the problem with last year, that really was the best room so far that we’ve been here then Tre (Harris) missed half the season. Tre only played in three SEC games and two of those in only one half. That would be all our losses, by the way. …This group is probably the deepest of any receiver room we’ve had.”
