When Ole Miss opens up the Oxford Regional on Friday it might still be without its complete regular outfield. That is if Ryan Moerman is still on the road to recovery.

Moerman collided with center fielder Isaac Humphrey in the second inning against Arkansas last Friday at the Southeastern Conference Tournament. He exited the game and did not play the rest of the week in Hoover.

On Monday Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco gave a positive update on Moerman’s progress and followed up after Thursday’s practice with another update on the status of the right fielder.

“Better. He’s in a brace but he’s come a long way,” Bianco said. “He’s taken (batting practice), all his swings, the last couple days. He’s shagging balls in the outfield but if you watch real close you can see there’s a limp there. Watched him run through the bases (on Wednesday). It was better than we thought, so each day he keeps continuing to get better and that’s what they say it will be.”

There is no pain at the plate when Moerman swings, according to Bianco, so it is all a pain tolerance in the field.

Mason Nichols is also progressing after sitting out the SEC Tournament due to an oblique injury. He exited the final game of the regular season against Auburn early. The usual Sunday starter threw a bullpen session on Wednesday, the first time he has thrown since the injury.

“As I said earlier in the week, I’d be surprised if both of those guys aren’t on the field in some capacity,” Bianco added. “Now, what that looks like I think it’s still day-to-day. So, Nichols hadn’t thrown through yesterday, see how he recovers from that, see what he looks like the rest of the weekend.”
