Dan Lanning has done it again. This time adding a key piece to the defensive class via the transfer portal.

Oregon has picked up a commitment from Iowa linebacker transfer Jestin Jacobs. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder is one of the top transfer on the market and has tremendous upside. Jacobs was being discussed as an NFL prospect prior to an injury that cut his season short in the second game.

In the 2021-2022 season, Jacobs played in 14 games for the Hawkeyes and recorded 53 total tackles and 1 interception.

Jacobs originally signed with Iowa as a part of its 2019 recruiting class. He was a four-star recruit and the No. 6 ranked player from his home state of Ohio.

Ohio State had also made a late strong push for Jacobs. The Ducks were very aggressive in the pursuit of Jacobs knowing what kind of impact he could have on this defensive unit.

Jacobs is commit No. 1 for Oregon via the transfer portal. The Ducks hosted five transfers on campus this weekend including Jacobs.

Last season in his first cycle, Dan Lanning signed 12 transfers including Bo Nix and Christian Gonzalez among many key starters for the Ducks. Oregon will likely sign a similar number this cycle as Lanning reloads his team. For the la

Transfer portal background information

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database, and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer must be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.
