Another former member of Matt Campbell’s Iowa State staff is officially joining him in State College. Penn State has hired Ryan Clanton to be its new offensive line coach. He replaces Phil Trautwein, who will be coaching at his alma mater, Florida, in 2026.

Clanton joined Campbell’s staff in Ames before the 2023 season. He is a former Oregon team captain and was a junior college All-American offensive lineman at the City College of San Francisco. A Bakersfield, Calif., native, he began his coaching career at Ventura College in California. He later moved on to Northern Iowa.

Chris Williams of Cyclone Fanatic first reported that Clanton would leave Iowa State for Penn State.

“Coach Clanton has got a great history of being a great developer,” Campbell said in 2023. “You look at his own collegiate career and his growth process and the success he had as a player to certainly what he’s been able to do at Northern Iowa and the success that he’s had at developing great offensive lines and great offensive linemen.

“I think both with Coach Clanton and then Coach Kagy, our strength and conditioning coach, I’ve really seen great physical growth and development over the course of the last four to five months, and I’m really excited. I really feel like we have elite pieces on that offensive line and elite young men that have the ability to really raise the level of excellence of our offensive line play.”

Kagy will also join Campbell at Penn State. He is the program’s new strength and conditioning coach. He will replace Chuck Losey, who is following James Franklin to Blacksburg.
