Penn State lost out on a commitment Thursday, as Nazareth, Pa., native and four-star prospect Peyton Falzone has decided to switch his commitment to Auburn. The Tigers extended an offer just over three weeks ago on June 2.

Listed at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, Falzone was originally recruited as a tight end by the Nittany Lions after putting up some very impressive testing numbers at a camp in June 2024. However, after making it clear that he wanted to play quarterback, Falzone committed to Virginia Tech shortly after and held firm with that throughout most of his junior season.

Then, in December, Falzone started working with quarterback trainer Brad Maendler. That’s the same quarterback coach who helped launch Drew Allar’s career. He also trained Ethan Grunkemeyer and many others.

“I think everybody wanted to see his release improve,” Maendler said.

Falzone’s father, Tom, is the head coach at Nazareth High School. He provided some background on his son’s path to becoming a quarterback prospect.

“Peyton was never really a quarterback growing up. We put him at quarterback out of necessity,” Tom Falzone said. “He was a good athlete and we thought he could handle it. He played some his freshman year and then became our starter his sophomore year. But he wasn’t one of those guys who played quarterback his entire life. He played receiver and did a little bit of everything. He grew to really love it pretty quickly.”

After seeing Falzone progress throughout the spring, head coach James Franklin offered him as a quarterback in April, which led Falzone to commit to the Nittany Lions shortly after. He then camped with Penn State quarterback coach Danny O’Brien multiple times this summer, including just last Sunday, June 22, for the Whiteout Camp. Those consistent visits to camp, along with his official visit May 30-June 1, make Thursday’s news all the more surprising.

It should be noted that Penn State previously had two quarterbacks committed to the program. Now, they’re back to just one in California native Troy Huhn.

Falzone was previously Penn State’s third-ranked recruit in the class, coming in at No. 208 nationally according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is the No. 8 athlete in the class and the No. 5 recruit from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. That also dropped Penn State down two spots in the Team Rankings from No. 10 nationally to No. 12.

As a junior, Falzone threw for 2,136 yards passing and 23 touchdowns. He also rushed for 743 yards and eight scores.
