Penn State wrestling opens its 2025-2026 season tonight when it takes on No. 22 Oklahoma at the Bryce Jordan Center. The No. 1 Nittany Lions start the year with a 71-match winning streak, which is the longest active one in college wrestling. The record for wins in a row is 76, and head coach Cael Sanderson’s team continues its pursuit of that mark against the Sooners.

“They have a strong team,” Sanderson said this week. “I think they had a lot of success in the transfer portal. Picked up, like, five or six really, really good, quality guys. So, it’s going to be a good test for us, and there’s going to be some big matches in there. Obviously, Oklahoma is one of the traditional powerhouses in the sport of wrestling, so we’re excited. [Penn State alum] Coach Mark Hall is on their staff [as the Director of Operations]. So, yeah, we got to be ready to go.”

Scouting the Sooners

Roger Kish enters his third season as the Oklahoma head coach. As Sanderson notes, the Sooners had plenty of success in the transfer portal this offseason. Two of the newcomers, Rafael Hipolito (from Virginia Tech) and Peyten Kellar (Ohio) are top 20 portal additions, per InterMat. They wrestle in the 157- and 165-pound weight classes, respectively.

Besides those two, who are Nos. 7 and 17 in their respective weight class rankings, per InterMat, Oklahoma also added expected starter Tyson Carmoli from Wyoming at 133, two-time NCAA qualifier Tyler Wells at 141 from Minnesota, Jack Gioffre from Virginia at 149, and senior Brian Soldano from Rutgers at 184 pounds.

The Sooners have ranked wrestlers in eight of the 10 weight classes. But, as we’ll note below, they might not all wrestle on Friday at Penn State. At any rate, they are as follows:

125 pounds: No. 29 Beric Jordan (Fr.)

149 pounds: No. 11 Jack Gioffre (Jr.)

157 pounds: No. 7 Rafael Hipolito (So.)

165 pounds: No. 17 Peyton Kellar (Sr.)

174 pounds: No. 33 Carter Schubert (So.)

184 pounds: No. 13 13 Brian Soldano (Sr.)

197 pounds: No. 8 DJ Parker (Sr.)

285 pounds: No. 24 Juan Mora (Sr.)

Parker and Mora are fresh off titles at Missouri’s Tiger Style Open.

Probable matchups for Lions-Sooners

This listing is unofficial until after weigh-ins. Those will take place on Friday afternoon, of course, before the match. Click the aforementioned link to visit The Wrestling Room forum for the latest updates. And note that, while top-ranked 197-pound wrestler and Penn State starter Josh Barr is out of the lineup due to a rib injury, Oklahoma does not list numerous starters on its match notes. Those are denoted below, where the listed wrestlers are in bold text and the expected starter is not.

For example, at 125, Jordan is not listed on the match notes probable lineup, so he is in non-bold text, while the wrestlers who are, Conrad Hendricksen OR Sebastian Degennaro, are in bold text.

Without further ado, here’s the list:
