James Franklin dropping in on Penn State commit while in California

Penn State arrived in Los Angeles on Thursday ahead of its matchup with UCLA on Saturday. In the meantime, however, Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin will continue to balance his coaching responsibilities with his recruiting duties.
“Friday will be like a normal Friday for us, except it will all happen in California,” Franklin said. “We’ll practice out there. We’ll have our meetings out there. It’ll basically be almost like a home game, but out there. By getting there a day early, it allows us to do all those things, and our day’s not broken up with travel. We’ll have our fast Friday practice, and then I’ll get out to recruit. But as you can imagine, I can’t mention where I’m going, but I’ll be there all day. I’ll just go to a [high school] game.”
Franklin’s stop on Friday will be down Interstate 5 in San Diego, where he’ll pop in to watch quarterback commit Troy Huhn in action. Huhn’s undefeated Mission Hills squad will take on 5-0 La Costa Canyon on Friday night in Carlsbad.
The game should be the stiffest test of the season so far for Huhn and Mission Hills, who are coming off a 52-0 romp of Ramona on Sept. 19. Huhn used his team’s bye week to visit Penn State for the Nittany Lions’ White Out matchup with Oregon last weekend. He completed 15-of-17 passes for 234 yards and five touchdowns in the win.
So far this season, Huhn has completed 84-of-108 passes (77.8 percent) for 1,080 yards and 14 touchdowns to just three interceptions. He has added a pair of scores on the ground as well, as Mission Hills has outscored opponents 180-40 over four games.

Huhn a solid commitment to Penn State
The Elite 11 finalist committed to Penn State before his junior season and remained locked in with the Nittany Lions ever since.
“Penn State is the school for me because of what they do for me,” Huhn told Rivals’ Chad Simmons this May. “The unconditional love they show me is unbelievable and I’m so grateful for it … I am done. They have always done such a great job keeping good care of me, nonstop checking in, making sure I am happy. I am locked in with Penn State.”
The Nittany Lions currently have the No. 16 recruiting class in the 2026 cycle, with 25 commits on board. Penn State ranks fifth in the Big Ten and has 11 four-star prospects in the class, according to the Rivals Industry rankings.
