Recap: Penn State beats Massachusetts 63-0; here's how it happened

Penn State football is back on the field today.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State pummeled UMass 63-0 on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Here’s how it happened.

Fourth quarter updates

6:52 — Penn State beats UMass 63-0.

6:36 — Touchdown, Penn State: Beau Pribula runs in from 31 yards out and the Lions have put up a 60 burger on UMass. The team leads 63-0 with 8:28 to play in the fourth quarter.

6:19 — Touchdown, Penn State: Trey Potts runs in from a few yards out to grow the Lions’ lead to 56-0 with 13:37 left in the fourth quarter against UMass.

Third quarter updates

6:08 — Keaton Ellis intercepted a UMass pass and returned it for a touchdown. But, it’s coming back due to a chop block on the return. Lions take over and the third quarter is over.

5:58 — Touchdown, Penn State: Daequan Hardy returns his second punt of the night for a touchdown, this time from 68 yards, and the Lions are blowing out the Minutemen at Beaver Stadium. It’s a 49-0 Lions lead in the third quarter.

5:51 — Touchdown, Penn State: Theo Johnson jumps into the end zone to complete an 18-yard catch and run for six. It’s 42-0 Penn State with 5:12 left in the third quarter.

5:42 — UMass will punt after D’Von Ellies earns a tackle for loss. There is about eight minutes to go in the third quarter.

5:34 — Touchdown, Penn State: Drew Allar to Theo Johnson for a 30-yard scoring strike. Lions go up 34-0 early in the third quarter.

5:27 — The third quarter is underway. Drew Allar is still at quarterback for Penn State after a quick three and out for the Lions’ defense.

Second quarter updates

5:05 — Penn State 28, UMass 0 at halftime on a rainy afternoon at Beaver Stadium.

4:56 — Touchdown, Penn State: Drew Allar hits Tyler Warren for six. The Nittany Lions are up 28-0 with 1:01 left in the first half as the rain continues to come down at Beaver Stadium.

4:47– UMass will punt yet again after another punishing performance by the Penn State defense. There is 3:50 left in the first half.

4:40 — Touchdown, Penn State: Kaytron Allen bullied his way into the end zone from nine yards out. It’s now a 21-0 Nittany Lions lead with 6:20 left in the first half.

4:32 — UMass will punt on 4th and 4 at the PSU 47 down 14-0. Unclear why, but that’s what they’re doing.

4:23 — Touchdown, Penn State: Drew Allar sneaks it in from a yard out. The Lions take a 14-0 lead over UMass with 12:35 left in the second quarter.

First quarter updates

4:17 — After one, it’s Penn State 7, UMass 0. Nittany Lions have 1st and 10 on the Minutemen 41-yard-line when play resumes.

4:14 — Daequan Hardy nearly follows up his punt return TD with an interception. But, he merely breaks up a third down UMass. Minutemen will punt with Kaden Saunders back deep this time.

4:06 — Touchdown, Penn State: Daequan Hardy takes a punt 56 yards to the house. It was his first return of the year in place of Kaden Saunders, who held the spot the first five weeks and fielded the first punt today. Lions 7, UMass 0, with 4:17 left in the first quarter.

4:01 — Penn State punts after a four yard loss and also a sack when Vega Ioane was beat. Not a good start for the Lions offense.

3:51 — Adisa Isaac and Dani Dennis-Sutton combine for Penn State’s first sack of the day, and UMass will punt it away after a quick three and out.

3:46 — Turnover: Trey Wallace fumbles in his return to the Penn State lineup. UMass recovered at its own 32.

3:41 — Nice return from Nicholas Singleton on a kickoff that did not make it to the end zone leads Penn State to set up shop at its own 29.

Nittany Lions-Minutemen pregame updates

3:37 — UMass wins the toss and defers. Penn State will receive to start this contest going right to left on your TV screen.

3:20 — Harrison Wallace III is back in the starting lineup for Penn State. Vega Ioane starts at the guard spot vacated by JB Nelson, who is out with an injury.

3:10 — Kickoff is set for 3:40 p.m. ET, FYI.

3:04 — Penn State guard JB Nelson, who is out today, is not out watching the lineman warmup. Harrison Trey Wallace III is back in his starting spot.

2:30 — Full team warmups are going to get going here soon. It’s mostly just a mist here now, though harder rain is possible before and after kickoff.

2 p.m. — The availability report is out. For the Nittany Lions, receiver Tyler Johnson, tight end Khalil Dinkins, quarterback Mason Stahl, receiver Carmelo Taylor, Feyisayo Oluleye, Patrick Williams, defensive end Mason Robinson, guard JB Nelson, Liam Powers, Jim Fitzgerlad, and defensive end Smith Vilbert are out. Nelson is the biggest blow. His status moving forward is unclear. No Nittany Lions are questionable.

1:30 p.m. — Penn State arrived at 1:30. The tarp came off the field about 12:35. The rain has slowed some but is still coming down. However, it is not torrential at this point in time but more of a drizzle.
