Penn State basketball walk-on true freshman guard Kaylen Oweh has entered the transfer portal, Blue White Illustrated has confirmed with sources Thursday. Oweh’s transfer was first reported by Verbal Commits.

In his first year as a Nittany Lion, Oweh saw action in just two games. First appearing for late minutes in a December game against Wagner, Oweh later notched a steal in three minutes in a blowout win against Minnesota in February.

A short-lived tenure with Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry and the Nittany Lions, Oweh’s connections to the program were multiple.

Penn State connections with Kaylen Oweh

Oweh’s older brother, Odafe, is coming off his rookie season as a defensive end with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. A former Penn State standout with head coach James Franklin, the older brother was the first of what was hoped to be an ongoing relationship with the family.

On the hardwood, Kaylen’s younger brother was similarly sought as part of Penn State’s signing Class of 2022. The first under Shrewsberry, Otega Oweh is an On3 Consensus four-star guard out of Blair Academy in New Jersey. Ranked No. 81 in the country, Oweh was also an AAU teammate to Jameel Brown, who committed to Penn State last September.

Brown, after choosing the Nittany Lions, said he intended to be an asset in the program’s pursuit of its pledges. Already having secured an official visit from Oweh, Penn State landed in his final pared-down list.

“Obviously, we want Derek Lively to come and Otega Oweh,” Brown said, explaining he’d try to get both to land at Penn State. “Definitely both of those two guys.”

In short order ahead of the 2021-22 season, the pot got sweeter for the younger Oweh when Kaylen walked on.

A 6-foot-2, 188-pound guard, Oweh contributed at St. Thomas Aquinas College prep school before enrolling with the Nittany Lions. That came after a productive career at Rutgers Prep High School, where Oweh notched 700 points, 250 rebounds, 110 assists and 80 steals according to Penn State.

The marriage wasn’t to be, however, with Otega Oweh and Penn State. Ultimately narrowing his choices to Penn State and Oklahoma, plus Miami and Illinois, Oweh decided to become a Sooner during an Oct. 1, 2021 selection ceremony.

“When I went on the visit, I just felt so comfortable,” Oweh told On3’s Joe Tipton. “I didn’t want to leave when I went down there. I blended in with the staff and the players immediately. Coach (Porter) Moser is a great coach. He’s known for development and just making his team and his players better. I want to be in that type of system.”
