Watch: Penn State coach James Franklin recaps win over FIU

STATE COLLEGE – Penn State improved to 2-0 Saturday with a 34-0 win over Florida International. Just like last week against Nevada, the Nittany Lions came into the game as big favorites. However, offensively, it was a struggle at times, especially on third down, as Penn State converted just 3 of 12 attempts throughout the game. They also had two turnovers on downs.
Quarterback Drew Allar wasn’t as sharp as many expected him to be, completing 19 of 33 attempts for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Reynolds led the team with seven receptions for 58 yards, but it was wide receiver Devonte Ross’ 42-yard, one-handed touchdown reception in the third quarter that stole the show.
“We’ve gone into these first couple of weeks with a philosophy of things we were trying to get done, in terms of building chemistry and confidence in certain aspects of the game, rather than just doing what we got to do to win games and score points,” said Penn State head coach James Franklin.
“I think those things could factor in, to a degree, and that really revolves around those three receivers. But again, we need to be more balanced and explosive on offense.”

Game Balls: Penn State wakes up late in win over FIU
Statistically, Penn State had 209 yards rushing, although nearly three-quarters of that total came on Kaytron Allen’s 67-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. He finished with 144 yards and a score, while Nick Singleton had 76 yards and a touchdown.
It wasn’t all bad, however.
Defensively, Penn State posted its first shutout of the season. Linebacker Tony Rojas led the team with 10 tackles, but it was freshman edge rusher Chaz Coleman who may have stood out the most to fans, finishing with four tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack. On top of that, he also had two quarterback hurries, a pass breakup and forced fumble late in the game that set up Penn State’s final touchdown.
“He wasn’t even here for spring ball, so I think you’re going to see him continue to take significant strides,” Franklin said after the game when asked about Coleman. “He’s quick, he’s twitchy, he’s athletic. He’s 250 pounds and looks skinny.”
