Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke to the media yesterday on National Signing Day about a wide variety of topics. Senior Editor for Blue White Illustrated, Nate Bauer, joins the BWI Daily edition to talk about those with host Thomas Frank Carr.

Penn State: State of the program

They start with a recap of Franklin’s comments and his theme of Wednesday’s availability. The theme of “bold and aggressive” was a significant talking point for Franklin, which Bauer recapped yesterday. After that quick recap, they dive into the topic of name, image, and likeness in college football. Penn State has been behind in this department, hence the urgency from Franklin on the matter. Bauer describes what he sees as the actionable items that can initiate movement for the program.

From there, they discuss NIL and all of its possibilities. So who is making moves and getting ahead of the curve? Is there an advantage for the Nittany Lions that they aren’t contained to a city ecosystem but to have sway across the entire state? Finally, they discuss Penn State’s leadership outside of football and some of the issues that stalled Franklin’s desires.

Penn State Football Mailbag!

After that, Bauer and T-Frank answer questions from viewers during their weekly mailbag session. Some of the topics of the day include:

What is the chief reason for Penn State’s lackluster record over the last two seasons?

Is it a mistake to cross-train athletes at multiple positions instead of specializing them from the beginning?

Related: Which Penn State coaches led the way in the Class of 2022, and who is an On3 top-10 recruiter in the cycle?

They use those topics and others as a jumping-off point for longer discussions about what’s fair to judge, how to build a stable program, and more.

Lastly, T-Frank brings up a misunderstood topic of conversation about the scheme, college football, and tactics adaptability during a season.
