Penn State Football weekly chat: Fallout from the team's first loss of the season

No matter where you look online, the house of Penn State football is on fire. Fans are upset after the team’s 30-24 loss to Oregon, thanks to an inept offensive performance for most of the night that ended with an interception in double overtime to end the game. Anything that isn’t bolted to the ground (and some things that are) is being picked up and examined to see if there’s a better part or piece to swap out on the offense. Of course, after any big-game loss at this point, questions arise about the administration potentially pulling the plug on Penn State head coach James Franklin. Here’s a small selection of what fans are asking the Blue White Illustrated staff this week about the program in our weekly football chat.
- If Penn State implodes this season, would James Franklin be on the hot seat for real with the administration?
- Are the best five playing on the O-line right now?
- Based on Franklin’s comment this week, do you think there will be a bigger effort to have Drew run more?
- Besides the WRs and LBs, who else are you looking forward to seeing get some run against UCLA?

Only the Penn State football team is focused on UCLA
Meanwhile, the team is working to win another conference game. They head out west to Los Angeles this week to take on UCLA in Penn State’s first road game of the 2025 season. With the frustration and distraction of the fanbase bubbling over in every corner of town, Franklin sees this as a good chance to reset with a road trip.

“It’s a good time to get out of town, for sure,” Franklin said. “These opportunities, you hear from a lot of the former players and NFL players that come back to talk, these are the times you miss, the time in the hotel, the time traveling. Obviously, we’ll fly out of Harrisburg and then fly back into [State College]. So we also have the aspect of getting to Harrisburg. But you know, these are important trips for us. We got to handle it well. You look at these West Coast trips or East Coast trips in the conference, some schools have really struggled with that. So, we got to do a good job. And then, just all the uncertainty that comes with this opponent and UCLA with the amount of changes that they’ve had. So it’s going to be an important game for us, an important trip.”
