Penn State Football weekly chat: Questions expand and intensify after 0-2 slide

The Penn State football team faces Northwestern on Saturday at 3:30 with its first chance to right the ship after a 0-2 start to Big Ten play. Penn State fans were on edge after a big game loss to Oregon to end September, and went fully off it with the loss to UCLA, which is the worst by any team this year. With that as the backdrop, it’s no wonder that everything from personnel to playcalling to staff hirings is under scrutiny this week. No decision by head coach James Franklin since January (and beyond) is safe. In this week’s Penn State football chat with the staff of Blue White Illustrated, we’re tackling those questions head-on.
- What’s the mood like in Lasch right now? We have heard some hints that it is not good.
- What has the Allar saga done to PSU in the QB recruiting trail?
- I remember Coach Franklin saying something along the lines of he won’t hire a coordinator that isn’t running close to the same stuff that PSU is already running. Did we do that with Jim Knowles?
- What do you believe the staff needs to see tomorrow most in order to keep moving forward, status quo and not needing to make radical changes to either side of the ball schematically or personnel-wise?

Impatience with the Penn State offense to see young faces
Aside from Kaytron Allen getting the ball more, the main pressure point on the Penn State staff this week has been getting young receivers on the field. The passing attack has struggled with the three transfer receivers leading the team, and fans want to know why freshman standout Koby Howard and redshirt pass catcher Tyseer Denmark haven’t seen the field with the starting unit.
“Obviously, we’re in a position right now where we don’t have plays and drives that just throw somebody out there and see how it goes. You know, we got to get our best guys on the field. Every rep is like gold, every drive is like gold, and we got to maximize that. And if we feel like guys give us a better chance based on what we see in practice, then yeah, we would do that. But if not, we’re not in a position right now to just put guys out there to see how they do. That’s what practice is for.”
