Penn State keeps spot in On3 Consensus Team Rankings

Penn State football’s latest verbal commitment for the Class of 2023, Oakdale, Conn., St. Thomas More defensive lineman Joseph Mupoyi, boosted the total pledges to 20 this cycle. It did not, however, change the Nittany Lions’ status in the updated On3 Team Recruiting Rankings.
With Mupoyi on board, Penn State sits at No. 14 in the updated rankings. The class consists of 14 four-stars and six three-stars. The per-recruit average rating of the class is 90.65, which would be 12th nationally.
And, the team score of 91.555 gives Penn State a nearly full-point advantage over No. 15 Texas A&M while nipping at the heels of No. 13 Southern Cal (91.618), No. 12 Oregon (91.632), and No. 11 Tennessee (91.812).
Importantly, this comes into play with the varied class sizes between programs. Along with the combined rankings for individual players and teams of the major recruiting sites, those being On3, Rivals, 247Sports, and ESPN, the On3 Consensus Team Ranking also compiles the highest-rated commitments by school to create a rolling average among Power Five programs. At this stage in the process, that is 18 commitments nationally.

Additionally, the On3 Consensus Team Rankings eliminate bonus points for having more commitments than other programs, whittling away at the built-in advantages of significantly larger class sizes. The model doesn’t disproportionately put weight on a program’s handful of top commitments and more appropriately represents the overall talent and depth of the class.
Penn State’s newest verbal commitment
Welcoming Mupoyi to campus this past weekend after initially offering him on Dec. 6, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound edge rusher landed on the Nittany Lions over strong consideration for Michigan, Maryland, and Auburn. But, in the Nittany Lions, Muypoi found a fit he couldn’t pass up.
“I feel very comfortable with them and my mom likes Penn State a lot, too, so of course, it’s a good relationship,” Mupoyi said. “I like what they do there, too. When I was at the game, coach told me to watch their defense, so I watched No. 20 [Adisa Isaac] a lot and No. 33 [Dani Dennis-Sutton]. They’re very good players and a great defense.”
