Penn State makes hiring of former Iowa State staffer Deon Broomfield official
New Penn State football coach Matt Campbell is officially bringing another former Iowa State staff member with him to State College. Former Cyclones safeties coach Deon Broomfield will be joining the Lions. His exact role is not yet clear. Campbell, who athletic director Pat Kraft hired last week, is still sorting out responsibilities for his assistant coaches. We already know that one of them will be current interim head coach Terry Smith, of course. He coached the cornerbacks during the entirety of the James Franklin era before taking over for him in mid-October. What this means for current Penn State co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter’s future in State College is not immedaitely clear.
Broomfield is a 34-year-old Melbourne, Fla., native. He played defensive back at ISU before a brief NFL stint. Later, he would break into the coaching world. After spending some time at the college level, he worked for the Houston Texans for a season in 2020. He then joined Campbell as his safeties coach in 2021. He later added the title of passing game coordinator.
“So I just think (it’s) a huge win for us in our program and then I think you talk character, cultural, you know, a great smile … great, great energy about himself. It’s already, you can tell it’s already had a huge impact and a huge positivity in our hallways, so we’re really excited to have Coach Broomfield here,” Campbell said in 2021, per Cyclone Fanatic.
Who else is coming to State College from Iowa State?
Here is our current list:
Derek Hoodjer – General manager
Trent Slattenow – Director of Player Personnel, Football (Kenny Sanders holds this role at Penn State. Slattenow having this title does not guarantee Sanders will leave. He may get a new title/role. That decision appears to be one of the many Campbell has to make.
Greg Brabenec – Chief of Staff (Kevin Threlkel previously held this role before leaving PSU for Virginia Tech)
