Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein will leave the Lions for a job at his alma mater, Florida

Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein will work elsewhere next season. He will be the next offensive line coach at his alma mater, Florida. ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news Friday afternoon.

Trautwein, who immediately tweeted a photo of a Gator, was not part of the staffing plan being developed by first-year head coach Matt Campbell. The new leader of the Nittany Lions is bringing his previous offensive line coach at Iowa State, Ryan Clanton, with him to State College. It is not immedaitely clear if Trautwein will coach the Lions through the Pinstripe Bowl.

Trautwein is finishing his sixth season in blue and white. The Florida alum joined former head coach James Franklin’s staff in 2020. Before that, he coached at Boston College and Davidson. A Vorhees, N.J., native, it is unclear if he might have a spot waiting for him on Franklin’s Virginia Tech staff.

“I know everyone says it’s part of the business, but it was sad,” Trautwein said of Franklin’s firing in November. “[Franklin was] someone that believed in me and brought me here. I never wanted to see that. That’s why we work as hard as we do as coaches. We’re here to help and guide and be great role models for these guys. At the same time, we have to win. When that doesn’t happen, I feel like I failed Coach Franklin. It’s tough.

“But, as fast as that happened, I have a great group of guys in the o-line room and I have to focus on the next task at hand, which is be 1-0. It hasn’t happened yet. But the guys are working and getting better. That’s our mindset, and then the end of the season, see what happens after that.”
