Penn State wrestling has made the top schools list for another top recruit in the Class of 2027. Junior Grey Burnett is down to three suitors, and all of them reside in the Big Ten. The Lions are now battling Ohio State and Nebraska for the next Perrysburg, Ohio star after landing Marcus Blaze out of the prep program in the Class of 2025. Burnett is a two-time state champ. He most recently won Ohio’s Division I 120-pound state title.

“I’m so proud of my son, Man,” Perrysburg head coach Scott Burnett, Grey’s father, told the Sentinel-Tribune last March. “He’s really embraced having (Perrysburg four-time state champion) Marcus Blaze as a teammate and a friend. He’s taking steps to be one of the next leaders on the team and I’m just proud of the way he carries himself just in general. For him to pick up mat points, from on top and open that match up was big. It’s amazing he can do that.”

Grey Burnett is MatScout’s No. 6 Class of 2027 prospect. The Lions also recently made the top group for the outlet’s No. 1 junior: Johnstown, Pa., Bishop McCort standout Melvin Miller. He’s now down to Penn State, Oklahoma StateMichiganVirginia TechOhio State, and Nebraska. Neither prospect appears to be in a rush to decide. Both will likely take visits this fall to help further figure out their recruitments and eventual destinations.

Quote of the day

“They’re big, they’re fast, they’re strong, they’re sound, fundamentally; you don’t see a lot of chinks in the armor. Obviously, you look for weaknesses, places to attack and exploit. You don’t really see many. Obviously, it’s the first game, but a [defensive] new coordinator. So we looked at a lot of things that Ohio State did in the past, but obviously Ohio State won a national championship last year. So same thing, you look for weaknesses. You really don’t see many from the best team in the country.

“They’re a team that, they’re going to force you to execute on every single play. They’re going to force you to be disciplined, force you to communicate. And then when you consider the fact they have one of the largest stadiums in the country, it makes communication an issue. And so our guys have to be dialed into the signals, clued into what we have to key when the ball is snapped, and play sound fundamental football, to give ourselves a chance. Because if you don’t, they can hurt you in many ways. But again, there’s a reason why they’re the preseason number two.”
