Penn State wrestling recruiting: Lions make top six for top 2027 recruit Melvin Miller

Penn State wrestling is one of six schools still in the running for the nation’s No. 1 Class of 2027 recruit, Melvin Miller. The Johnstown, Pa., Bishop McCort star is considering the Lions along with Oklahoma State, Michigan, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and Nebraska.
“It’s worth noting that NC State, Arizona State, Pittsburgh, and Missouri were all previously in Miller’s top 8 but have been removed from this list. Virginia Tech and Ohio State were schools not previously included in Miller’s top schools, but have since been added to his latest school list,” Jon Kozak writes for FLO Wrestling.
“Entering his junior year, Miller is already an incredibly accomplished high school wrestler. He’s a two-time Pennsylvania state champion and a two-time Fargo champion. He finished as runner-up in the 2025 U20 World Team Trials challenge tournament and finished fifth at the 2024 U17 World Championships.”
Miller is the top junior on MatScout’s Class of 2027 big board. He is No. 4 on the outlet’s overall pound-for-pound high school big board and No. 1 at 165 pounds. He projects to wrestle somewhere in the middle-to-upper weight classes in college. Miller is the brother of highly-regarded Class of 2026 recruit Bo Bassett. Many believe the pair will end up at the same college. Bassett was previously committed to Iowa. But, he backed away from that pledge earlier this year. At the same time, Miller cut the Hawkeyes from his list of suitors.

Who else is Penn State after in the Class of 2027
Penn State wrestling and its storied brand can recruit nationally, of course. But, in the next recruiting cycle, it should not hurt matters much that the top talent lives either a short drive from or, at the very least, not overly far away from State College. Miller leads MatScout’s 2027 big board followed by future middle weight Joe Bachmann of Faith Christian Academy. New Jersey’s Sonny Amato is third on the list. Norwin standout Landon Sidun checks in at No. 4. And after Utah’s Israel Borge at No. 5, Perrysburg, Ohio star Grey Burnett checks in at No. 6.
It will be interesting to see who shows up on the sidelines at Beaver Stadium for Penn State-Oregon game at the end of the month. The White Out game is always an opportunity for other teams to bring their top recruits to campus for the school’s premier game day environment. Cael Sanderson and co., won’t miss their opportunity to do exactly that in a few weeks.
