It’s the final Friday before spring practice, Penn State fans.

Things are hardly quiet in the world of Nittany Lions athletics, however. Head coach Cael Sanderson’s wrestling team is in action today. A football signee won’t play in an all-star game. And, an alum has signed with a new NFL team.

Those stories, and much more, are included in the newsstand for March 17. Let’s get to the top tweets and headlines of the day.

We start with an update on Drew Shelton.

PennLive reports that the On3 Consensus four-star offensive lineman from Downingtown has opted out of the Big 33 Classic. The annual and long-running high school football all-star game is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg.

No reason was given as to why Shelton will no longer play. He was originally one of seven Penn State signees and/or walk-ons who were selected to represent Pennsylvania in the game against Maryland.

In other news, Brett McMurphy of The Action Network reported Thursday that Northern Illinois athletic director Sean Frazier is a “prominent target” to replace the retiring Sandy Barbour at Penn State.

Frazier played football at Alabama and coached it at Maine. He worked at three smaller schools before working under Barry Alvarez from 2007-2013 at Wisconsin. There, he “oversaw all fundraising and advancement activities,” among other things, according to his NIU bio. He has been with the Huskies for nine years.

Finally, it is day two for Penn State wrestling at the NCAA Championships.

The Nittany Lions lead Arizona State, Iowa, and Michigan after two sessions. Head coach Cael Sanderson’s team has six wrestlers alive in the quarterfinals and three battling in elimination matches when the action begins at 11 a.m. on Friday.
