Penn State wrestler Tyler Kasak speaks with USA Wrestling following his 70-kilogram gold medal win at the Bill Farrell.

The final offseason weekend of the year for the Penn State wrestling team is in the books. However, as has been the case for much of the last eight months since the Nittany Lions locked up their latest team title in Philadelphia, describing the last few days as ‘off’ would be inaccurate.

One current member of the team competed in Saturday’s prestigous Bill Farrell Memorial Invitational men’s freestyle tournament. Junior and two-time All-American Tyler Kasak took home a gold medal in the 70-kilogram (156.5 pounds) bracket. He beat two-time finalist and 2024 NCAA champ Caleb Henson of Virginia Tech by decision, 6-3, in the semifinals. Then, he beat former Iowa State All-American and current UNI assistant Ian Parker in the finals, 3-2, on the strength of two step outs and a passivity point.

“I love to compete, and also, I wanted to get my hands on some International guys,” Kasak told USA Wrestling. “It didn’t really happen, but I also competed against some of the best guys America has to offer for the weight. So, that’s good. I wanted to get freestyle experience. That’s where I want to further my career to when my college career ends.”

Kasak was to be joined by current teammate Masanosuke Ono at the event. But, despite being entered at 57 kilograms, the Penn State newcomer did not compete. Other Nittany Lion connections at the tournament include All-American alum Beau Bartlett, who lost to Virginia Tech commit Bo Basset in the 65-kilogram final, and Class of 2026 commit Sam Herring, who went 1-2 at 61 kilograms.
