New Penn State football coach Matt Campbell put another piece in place for his first staff with the Nittany Lions on Thursday. Campbell has officially hired former Iowa State offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser for the same role in State College. He will also handle the tight ends.

Blue White Illustrated’s Nate Bauer first reported that Mouser was joining the staff earlier this week. Mouser joins a growing list of former Iowa State staffers to join Campbell at Penn State, including a slew of administrative assistants, including GM Derek Hoodjer and chief of staff Greg Brabenec, among others. BWI reported more on his hiring on Thursday here.

New Penn State assistant Mouser climbed the ranks at Iowa State under Campbell

Mouser’s name was one of the first to come up when discussing potential coaches who could follow Campbell to Penn State. He rose through the coaching ranks at Iowa State in his ten seasons with Campbell, after following him from Toledo as a graduate assistant in 2015. Mouser assumed that same role in 2016 in Campbell’s first season with the Cycones before shifting into an analyst role from 2017 to 2020, first as the Assistant Director of Scouting from 2017-18 and then the Senior Quality Control analyst on offense.

Mouser got his first chance to coach a position in 2021, when Campbell named him the tight ends coach, a role he held for three seasons, earning the assistant head coach role in 2023. He then added his final title in 2024, when Campbell promoted him to offensive coordinator after Nate Scheelhaase left the program to join the LA Rams as the passing game coordinator.

Since he took over the tight end position, the Iowa State tight ends have produced 3,685 yards, second only to Utah during that time span, dating back to 2021. In fact, Iowa State was second to Utah in receptions, yards, and first downs in the last five seasons.

As offensive coordinator, the Iowa State offense was somewhat inconsistent in passing the football. Starting quarterback Rocco Becht completed 59.4 percent of his passes over the last two seasons, which is 17th among qualifying Big 12 QBs in the past two seasons. Becht’s passer rating of 90.3 also ranks 15th in the confernece.
