STATE COLLEGE — Oregon coach Dan Lanning was rightly pumped up following his team’s thrilling 30-24 double overtime victory over Penn State on Saturday night in State College. His Ducks team blew a 17-3 lead only to pick off Lions quarterback Drew Allar in overtime to secure the victory.

“I think that’s the best game I’ve ever been a part of, regardless of who won that game, unbelievable back and forth,” Lanning said. “Penn State is a damn good football team. They figured out some stuff there against us at the end. I think we both scored two touchdowns in the second half, just an unbelievable back and forth.”

The Ducks coach was also effusive in his praise of quarterback Dante Moore. He outclassed Allar, finishing 29 of 39 for 248 yards and three touchdowns.

“I think we have the best quarterback in college football,” Lanning said. “Anybody watch that game? That guy’s composure, his poise…tells you a little bit about that guy.”

He also liked the way his team responded to the second-largest crowd in Beaver Stadium history.

“This is a huge one for our entire team, right? Because that crowd’s probably worth seven points, right? And they really weren’t tonight,” Lanning said. “I really didn’t feel that much ourselves.”

What did Penn State players say following the loss?

Here’s a look at what came out of the Penn State media room following the setback:

“I don’t prepare all week to come out and lose the game, so obviously it hurts. We had opportunities. I think that’s kind of the, unfortunately, the bright side of it, is we had opportunities, obviously, at the end, to come back and win the game, if we go down and score and make the two point conversion. But, I mean, that’s the way it shakes out.

“It’s a long season ahead of us. We’re gonna have more opportunities down the road to fix this and, you know, I’ll be the first to go into the fire. There’s no other coaching staff or team that I’d rather go to war with. And I know we’re going to make the most of this opportunity a month and grow from it.”

–PSU QB Drew Allar.

“I would say we played a good game. A lot of stuff that we’ve got to clean up late in the game that we didn’t execute at a high level, allowing them to score. At the end of the day, our job is to not let them score. So, anytime they score any points, that’s on us. I feel like we didn’t hold up our bargain, but we played a decent, decent game. We’ve got a lot of room to grow.”

–Penn State LB Amare Campbell.

“It’s something I’ve learned since I’ve been here, now that I’m a senior, I’m an older guy, I’ve lost reps. I’ve lost games, big games, whatever it is. Like, I’ve been in that position before, so it’s a little bit easier for me. And I try to teach the younger guys like, ‘hey, next rep, next play, next game,’ whatever it is, like, just focus on what’s ahead of you. Because if you focus too much on this past game, that’s going to translate to next game, then it’s going to turn into a bad time. So I’ve gotten better.”
