Penn State news, notes, and updates for May 17 include the Lions’ spot in a Big Ten power rankings list, headlines of the day, and more.

It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with new Big Ten power rankings. For CBS Sports, Tom Fornelli took a crack at organizing the conference now that it has no divisions. Ohio State, Oregon, and Michigan lead the way in that order. Penn State checks in at No. 4.

“We could be on the precipice of a new era at Penn State — one where the Nittany Lions are no longer in the same division as Ohio State and Michigan and could reach the College Football Playoff without winning the Big Ten,” Fornelli writes. “Of course, even with that being the case, they’re still only fourth in these power rankings behind a new incoming powerhouse program! For the most part, the 2024 version of Penn State won’t look all that dissimilar to the 2023 version. The hope is a year of growth from Drew Allar under new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki will be enough to take this team to the next level.”

USC rounds out the top five. It’s also worth noting that the Lions will face three of Fornelli’s projected five worst teams in 2024: No. 15 Minnesota, No. 16 UCLA, and No. 17 Purdue. Only Indiana checks in below that trio.

Quote of the day

“Our goal is to compete for championships while doing it the right way. But having an elite NIL program is critical to this mission. A strong NIL program is a foundational component of building and maintaining an elite roster of players that will ensure our program is competitive in today’s college football.

“Our staff has done an amazing job of bringing in high-level players that uphold the standard of wearing the blue and white. Now we must ensure we do everything we can to guarantee our roster is the best it possibly can be for this upcoming season.”
