2027 Sowunmi recaps visit

2027 Brownsburg (Ind.) defensive lineman Dami Sowunmi is looking to stay closer to home while he plays his college football. Purdue provides that opportunity for one of the top in-state prospects in the class.
The Boilermakers hosted Sowunmi on Saturday during their loss to Illinois, and the rising junior was impressed by what he saw from Kelvin Green’s defensive front, which held Illinois to less than 3.0 yards per carry.
“I mean, the D-line, they were doing their thing,” said Sowunmi. “They were putting some pressure on that quarterback, forcing some bad passes, getting some sacks. So at the end of the day, I mean they did their job.”
The Purdue defense as a whole struggled, but the front line defended the run well and tallied four tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks against the Illini. Green sees the potential for Sowunmi to join that unit and be a difference-maker if he were to wind up in West Lafayette.
“He’s been saying that I’m a really good player. He can see me being a really good three technique on that line,” Sowunmi said. “They like how fast I am off the ball, quick feet, quick hands, very strong at that three technique, and even can play that five (technique) so, I mean, they really love my speed and how I get off the ball well.”

Sowunmi has shown improvement as a junior, racking up 13 total tackles, six tackles for loss and four sacks, setting new career-bests in tackles for loss and sacks already this season. The catalyst behind that has been using his hands, which he admitted was a weakness of his a year ago.
“I’ve definitely improved on my hands. You can tell that last year didn’t really use my hands a lot. You know, kept bumping chest to chest. This year, I’ve definitely been able to use my hands well and make plays,” Sowunmi said.
As Sowunmi continues to take more game day visits, he is looking for the coach that will continue his development and give him the best opportunity to further his career at the pro level.
The Brownsburg native will visit Louisville on October 25th, followed by Michigan on November 1st, which is when the Boilermakers will be in Ann Arbor. Purdue offered back in May, and is joined by Iowa, Kansas, Indiana, and Louisville, as the top schools in Sowunmi’s recruitment.
