Barry Odom: Purdue QB Ryan Browne 'doubtful' for Rutgers game
There are question marks at the quarterback position for Purdue this week, as Ryan Browne is dealing with a shoulder injury he sustained against Northwestern on Saturday afternoon. Coach Barry Odom spoke about Browne’s status for Saturday’s homecoming game against Rutgers, on the heels of Purdue’s Monday practice, which Browne participated in.
“Ryan’s our starting quarterback, and right now, I would list him, going into, after today, I would say he would be doubtful. There is a difference in practicing and no contact and executing a game plan. So we’ve got to train multiple quarterbacks, which we will. I think Malachi continues to improve that Meredith does as well. But it would be a doubtful at this point on where we’re at in the game plan,” Odom said.

Browne went down on the first drive of the second half against the Wildcats and would be sidelined for the remainder of the 19-0 defeat in Evanston.
The redshirt sophomore has started all seven games to this point for offensive coordinator Josh Henson, completing 59.9% of his passes for 1,572 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also has 163 yards and four scores on the ground.
If Browne is unable to suit up on Saturday, all signs point to Malachi Singleton being the starter against the Scarlet Knights. Singleton has been the backup all season and has seen an uptick in playing time over the last two games.

The Arkansas transfer had five carries for 73 yards and a touchdown against Minnesota, serving as a change of pace quarterback in certain packages. In reserve duty against Northwestern, Singleton was 11-20 for 187 yards, with an interception and a lost fumble.
“We don’t really know what’s going to happen at this point. We’re going to take it through the week and try to figure out, obviously, where the health is at, but if Malachi is our guy, he’s our guy. And he proved that he can come in the game and play well,” offensive coordinator Josh Henson said.
“I think he did some good things the other day. And I think there are some times he didn’t have the opportunity to let the play, play out, because we did not perform in winning ways, in a number of spots around him,” Odom said.
Odom did not rule Browne out for Saturday, but the Boilermakers’ starting quarterback’s status remains up in the air to start the week.
