Recruiting News and Notes

Recruiting News from the week of June 5, 2025. There is much more on GoldandBlack.com
PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING
Purdue is going to need size in that big 2026 class and also has offers out to bigs Jamyn Sondrup, Kansas’ Ethan Taylor and Arizona’s Cameron Williams, though he is being recruited as a 4. Not sure if Purdue is in the picture for Taylor or if it’s really trying to be, but they are in a great spot with Sondrup, but just have to get him to leave home.

Could be a multi-big class for Purdue and could another year the portal comes into play.
• Trey Thompson has drawn a bunch of offers lately — about time — and will take visits, but people are going to have to unseat Purdue, which won’t be easy. Sounds like officials start this weekend with Tennessee before Thompson goes to NBA Camp in Rock Hill. Other officials figure to be Clemson, Iowa and Kansas.
Our sense is Purdue’s fine here still, but nature just needs to run its course here. There’s no other side of the story here. But as close as he’s seemed to committing before, the trigger was never pulled, and as long as he’s setting foot on other peoples’ campuses, all outcomes are on the table. That’s just recruiting.
• With or without Thompson, Purdue may hit the portal at the 4 and that market has already begun being combed. The 15th roster spot is open in the event something pops up in the short term, a redshirt situation in advance of next season. They are not adding anyone else to this season’s active roster.
• Colben Landrew was awesome at the adidas event overseas. He is going to officially visit Purdue later this month.
• Friday is a big day for Purdue’s team camps. Among the players who should be present: Jason Gardner and Cooper Zachary; 2027 target Shawn Foster of Ohio (likely an offer guy this summer, IMO);; and New Albany 2028 guard Noah Washington, who’s at Purdue’s team camp today. Dikembe Shaw of Crown Point and Baron Walker of Noblesville are names, too. Caleb Coolman of Penn is a real prospect in the 2028 class.
PURDUE BASKETBALL
• Purdue will start practice Monday with a skeleton crew, as Omer Mayer will not be present as he has obligations with Team Israel overseas and Oscar Cluff won’t be around right away as he is back home in Australia awaiting the renewal of his visa beyond its current term, which has not yet expired. It’s complicated, more so these days.
Additionally, Liam Murphy is recovering still from a shoulder injury and should be limited and Raleigh Burgess is basically out all summer after his spring surgery. So Purdue’s Day 1 group of newcomers will basically be Antione West and that’s it. West arrived on campus this week.
Purdue will have Daniel Jacobsen for the first week of practice before he heads to CoSprings for the 19U team try-outs.
• Sounds like Purdue is going to try to find some minutes this summer and into the season for redshirt freshman Jack Benter as a fourth-guard sort of 4 man, which is interesting because that’s what Murphy is for. Probably just means Purdue likes Benter enough to try to get him in wherever it can and also may want to experiment to see where he can fit in long-term.
PURDUE FOOTBALL
• Purdue will report for camp on July 30 with practices starting July 31. The team will practice 25 times leading up to the opener vs. Ball State on Aug. 30 in Ross-Ade Stadium. There will be two scrimmages and a mock game in August. Classes start August 25.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
• Purdue will welcome another raft of recruits this weekend for official visits.
Last weekend’s group of official visits netted two commitments: Florida WR Kymistrii Young and Georgia S Dana Greenhow. Purdue now has nine 2026 commits.

Three of this weekend’s visitors are currently committed elsewhere: DT Josiah Hope (Louisville); EDGE Max Carmicle (Northern Illinois); ATH Amarion Queen (USF).

And at one time, WR Emoni Smith was a Louisville commit.
A look at who is slated to be in West Lafayette this weekend for OVs:
• 2026 OL Brody Smith of Maryville (Tenn.)
• 2026 DL Josiah Hope of Radcliff (Ky.) North Hardin: LOUISVILLE COMMIT
• 2026 ATH Emoni Smith of Galloway (Ohio) Westland
• 2026 CB Tylen Mathews of Lake Cormorant (Miss.)
• 2026 EDGE Max Carmicle of Country Club Hills (Ill.) Hillcrest: NORTHERN ILLINOIS COMMIT
• 2026 ATH Amarion Queen of Stuart (Fla.) Martin County: USF COMMIT
• 2026 WR Devyon Hill-Lomax of Edwardsville (Ill.)
• What is Purdue getting in Florida WR Kymistrii Young? A breakdown.
Really raw, extremely talented, just scratching the surface of how good he can be; has elite traits in terms of length, speed and athletic ability; best football is ahead of him.

• What is Purdue getting in Georgia S Dana Greenhow? A breakdown.

A little undersized but room to grow and develop; needs a college weight room; very athletic with good coverage ability, good quickness, speed and change of direction. Competitive and tough, not afraid to be physical despite his size; versatile DB that can play corner, nickel or potentially safety depending on how he grows and develops.
• Purdue held the first of its three June camps on Tuesday, and 2027 QB Jake Nawrot (Prospect Heights, Ill., John Hersey) and 2027 DL David Hill (Homewood-Flossmoor, Ill.) earned offers.
• Purdue also offered 2027 QB JJ Chapman of Oak Creek (Wis.):
“I met Coach (QB coach Darin) Hinshaw a year ago when he was at UCF,” Chapman told GoldandBlack.com. “When I heard he was coming to Purdue, I was really excited. I am extremely optimistic about Purdue making a huge comeback. Coach Odom has put together an elite crew.”
What type of a QB is Chapman?
“A leader on and off the field,” he said. “Aggressive, but smart. I love the mental aspect of the game. I am a fluid passer and can deliver the ball where it needs to be. I can also make plays with my feet when needed.”
• Purdue’s top 2027 QB target? It may be Jupiter (Fla.) Spanish River’s Champ Smith, who was at camp on Tuesday.
“The town of West Lafayette was very cool,” he told GoldandBlack.com. “Loved the facilities and community around the football program. It was my first time in West Lafayette.
“The offensive coaching staff stood out! Coach Hensen, Coach Ford, Coach Hinshaw, Coach Appleby and Coach Posey. Each one has their own specialty yet I can tell how well they are all working together. I have known Coach Hinshaw a couple of years and I know he is one of the best QB coaches in the country. I get the same feeling about the rest of the offensive staff. Each one stand out to me based on their dedication to the new culture they are building at Purdue. Coach Hensen and Coach Hinshaw explained the new culture at Purdue is all about personal accountability for their actions and that has clearly been embraced by the coaches and players based on what I have seen and heard.”
