More Purdue football recruiting from Jellison

While Purdue is busy building its 2026 recruiting class, the first full class under head coach Barry Odom and staff, the quarterback spot in the 2027 class has now come into focus.

One of its top targets in the cycle: Four-star West Valley City (Utah.) signal-caller Kamden Lopati. He was on campus last week for one of the Boilermakers’ prospect camps, where he got a better feel for the staff and program

One thing stood out above all else from Lopati’s second trip to West Lafayette in 2025, who is being wooed by quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw.

“How strong the coaches are on me, like Coach (Josh) Henson and Coach (Darin) Hinshaw and Coach (Barry) Odom, how strong they are on me and how much they believe in me,” Lopati said.

Lopati had the opportunity to throw in front of the Purdue coaches at last Wednesday’s camp, as well as being coached up by Hinshaw whose calm but calculated style is intriguing to the Utah gunslinger.

“He knows his stuff. He’s very detailed in everything that he does, explains everything to a good point. He doesn’t really yell too much. He just talks to you, which I like,” Lopati said.

Purdue has made it a priority to recruit quarterbacks with dual-threat ability, which fits Lopati to a tee, as well as his ability to make just about any throw.

Seeing what Purdue’s scheme is going to look like heading into the fall after meetings with Henson and Hinshaw leads Lopati to believe he would fit into the Boilermakers’ attack.

“I think I fit great into their scheme, just really throwing it in with Coach Henson, and just getting to know their offense on the board and stuff. I feel like I fit in pretty good,” Lopati said. “Obviously, I throw the ball good, but I think I’m better as a leader, getting to know who I’m playing with. I think that’s the biggest thing.”

While Lopati doesn’t have a concrete timeline for a commitment, he shared that he could see himself making a decision upon the conclusion of his busy summer of visits. That slate has included Illinois, Notre Dame, Arizona State, Washington, Oregon, and Purdue, and will be capped off by a visit to Alabama on Saturday.

It’s thought that the race consists of Purdue, Notre Dame and Arizona battling it out for one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 recruiting class, as Lopati ranks 20th in the nation at the position.

Ultimately, Lopati is looking for the best overall fit for him and his family as decision time is potentially on the horizon.

“If it’s the best fit for me” Lopati said. “That’s really up to me and my parents, because we’ve been all over the place with the recruiting thing. That’s why we’re going on so many visits.”

The Boilermakers “helped themselves a lot”, as Lopati put it, with his most recent visit to West Lafayette, as Odom and company continue their push for a top target, which would kick off the 2027 class in a big way. https://www.hudl.com/embed/video/3/19569067/672fed13b8639319350c962b
