Series notes: The battle for the Shillelagh trophy returns on Saturday as Purdue and Notre Dame meet for the 89th time. The two met annually from 1946 to 2014, but the series temporarily ended following seven consecutive Fighting Irish victories from 2008 to 2014. A six-game resumption of the rivalry began in 2021, and Notre Dame took both of the contests in the current series. Notre Dame defeated Purdue 27-13 in 2021 beneath the Golden Dome before handing Purdue a 66-7 defeat inside Ross-Ade Stadium last September. Purdue last downed the Fighting Irish in 2007, a 33-19 win over Charlie Weis’ team. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 60-26-2 and enters on a nine-game win streak in the series.
