Q: How are we to define a successful season this year?-Drjimdvm
A: No. 1, be competitive in each game, look organized, have a plan …. don’t get embarrassed.

No. 2, win 3-6 games. I know the staff feels good and is aiming for a bowl. Oddsmakers have Purdue’s over/under win total at 3 or 3.5. So, there you go: 3-9, 4-8.

A 4-8 mark would impress me. To get to 6-6 may be asking too much. Who could they beat to get to 6-6?

Ball State
SIU
Minnesota
Rutgers
Northwestern
Indiana or Illinois

Could be dicey to get to 6-6. MAYBE 5-7.

Q: Do you think we are on a commitment watch for this weekend?-kkyle24
A: I don’t think anything is imminent, but anything could happen. Recruiting is fickle and emotional. Maybe CB Raderrion Daniels of Lake Cormorant (Miss.) because he’s been recruited by DB coach Charles Clark since he was at Memphis and the kid has been on campus here a couple times.

Q: Are we actively pursuing DE Aaden Aytch from Lafayette Jeff?-Boiler1987
A: The 6-4, 210-pound Aytch is a Northern Illinois commitment. A nice prospect. Yes, Purdue is pursuing Aytch. Iowa, Rutgers and Minnesota also have offered, in addition to Purdue. It has been a while since a player from Jeff was on the Purdue roster. Was it Dustin Keller? That long ago? Back in my days in the 1980s, a lot of Jeff guys went to Purdue: QB Doug Downing (who I grew up with), LBs Jim and John McKenzie, OL Rick Skibinski, OL Todd Tyrie, OL Doug Isbell. I recall in the 1990s DL Ben Metzger played for the Boilers.

Q: After spring practice you wrote that Purdue was lacking in size. Do they look like a Big Ten team now after the spring portal?-Boilerbama
A: Yes, I think they took steps toward “looking the part” by adding guys like Marques Easley  (6-5, 325), Tyrell Green (6-5, 355) and Marc Nave (6-6, 335), Breylon Charles (6-3, 260), Hershey McLaurin (6-2, 210), among others.

Q: Just read your linebacker preview. While it’s a TBD unit at this point, where do you think, if any, are the upgrades in it? Speed? IQ? Size?-Drjimdvm
A: I think overall, it’s a talent upgrade–speed, size–with guys like Mani Powell (UNLV), Alex Sanford (Arkansas) and Sanders Ellis (Tennessee State), in particular. And Charles Correa (UNLV) also is intriguing. Carson Dean (Arkansas)? I don’t know. He seemed to get lost in the depth chart this spring was often running with the 3rd or 4th team. I am really eager to see Ellis, who had some nice offers: Va Tech, Tennessee, Auburn.

Q: Has Barry Odom and his staff ever commented off the record on the train wreck that was last season? Or do they just put it in the rear view mirror and build from the ground up?-boilergo
A: Odom has never said anything on or off the record about the what he walked in to. Doesn’t seem to be his style to rip others. He just focuses on what he can control and has his eyes pointed forward, which is a good thing.
