Purdue lands commitment from JC WR Leland Smith

Purdue has added another weapon to its 2024 offense by landing a commitment from Fullerton (Calif.) College WR Leland Smith on Signing Day. He will have three years of eligibility and enroll this summer.
Smith chose the Boilermakers over Mississippi State, Cincinnati, Temple, Coastal Carolina and Georgia State. He visited West Lafayette on February 2.

Smith is a 6-5, 205-pound product of Strake Jesuit High in Houston who was headed to Penn initially out of high school in 2022. He ended up taking a PWO offer to TCU, where he played in 2022. A staff shakeup in Fort Worth caused him to look elsewhere, landing at Fullerton JC in 2023 when he made 24 catches for 634 yards and nine TDs. His 26.4 yards per catch led the JC ranks.

The 6-5 Smith will join three portal receivers who are on campus: Kam Brown (UCLA), C.J. Smith (Georgia) and De’Nylon Morrissette (Georgia).
Purdue needs wideout help. The program saw six scholarship wideouts enter the portal after the 2023 season: Deion Burks (Oklahoma), T.J. Sheffield (Michigan State), Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen (South Florida), Elijah Canion, Mershawn Rice and Curtis Deville. Walk-on Trey Firestone (Ball State) also has jumped in the portal.
