Volleyball Beats Buckeyes, Falls to No. 1 Nebraska

The No. 12 Boilermakers fell in straight sets for the first time this season as No. 1 Nebraska took the match 23-25, 16-25, 15-25.

With the result over Purdue’s October break, the Boilermakers fall to 13-3 (4-2 Big Ten) while the Huskers remain undefeated at 16-0 (6-0 Big Ten).

Boiler Notes

  • It was the only time Purdue has been swept this season
  • Purdue and Nebraska were tied 19 times in the first set with five lead changes. The close battle saw the score tied 22-22, however the Huskers closed the match on a 3-1 run, with Grace Heaney postponing the end of the set with a kill at 23-24.
  • Purdue out-dug Nebraska in the first set, 19-16
  • Kenna Wollard was the first player on the court to reach double-digit kills and went errorless in the third set (4-0-6) on her way to finishing the day with 14 kills, three digs and a perfect reception rate (23 receptions, no errors).

In efficient fashion, Purdue swept Ohio State 25-19, 25-16, 25-17 for the squad’s third straight win.

The Boilermakers, improving to 13-2 (4-1 Big Ten) had an efficient night, hitting .429% in the match while holding Ohio State (3-10, 0-5 Big Ten) to .126%. No Boilermaker had more than three attack errors.

Boiler Notes

  • Akasha Anderson finished the match with 14 kills, tying her Big Ten season-high while hitting .414%, a Big Ten season-high and second-overall highest clip of the season.
  • Kenna Wollard, coming off the AVCA National Player of the Week award on Tuesday, totaled 15 kills, including eight in the final set and hit .400 in the match.
  • Purdue posted seven unanswered points in the third set to take the lead, 16-12, after trailing 9-12, and maintained the lead the rest of the stretch.
  • The Boilermakers have won the last nine consecutive sets.
  • Akasha Anderson and Grace Heaney each posted five kills in the opening set on an errorless clip, combining for a .607 clip.
  • Taylor Anderson registered 35 assists, six digs and two block assists.
  • In the first set, Purdue out-blocked Ohio State 5-0 to set the tone, holding the team to a .029 attack % in the frame.
  • The win marked the sixth sweep of the season for the Boilers.
  • With the win, Purdue takes the series lead, 49-48 all-time. 
  • The Boilermakers posted just two attack errors in every set to finish the match with six total, a season-low.
  • Lindsey Miller registered four blocks, all of which came in the first set.
  • Bianka Lulic went errorless in the match with five kills on seven attacks (.714)

Up next, Purdue will face #20 Indiana for the rights to the Monon Spike trophy, a match that will take place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The showdown is slated for a 7 p.m. ET start on Thursday (Oct. 16) on the Big Ten Network. Then, Purdue closes out the weekend at Rutgers on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on B1G+.

Boilermaker Swimmers Win 10 Events at Home Opener

Swimming & Diving’s 10 event wins Saturday at the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate included repeat victories for a pair of seniors at the annual home opener, a sweep of the springboard diving events and two relay winners for the men.

Daryn Wright swept the springboard diving events at the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate for the third time in her career, finishing her four years at the meet 7-for-8 in event victories. Max Miller and Zach Welsh swept the men’s springboard events and the wins – coupled with having at least five of the top finishers – helped the Purdue men finish atop the team scoring on a day in which many of the Boilermakers’ swimmers primarily competed in their secondary or off events.

Lara Phipps and Kate Mouser teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle, an event in which the Purdue women had four of the top five finishers. Phipps was also the runner-up in the 100 individual medley and led off the 200 free relay with a 50 split of 22.94 to move into 13th place in program history.

For the men, newcomers Alex Hotta (100 back) and Brody LePine (100 IM) won their events via heat 1 victories. They also helped Purdue win the 500 free relay, an event that was added to the annual in-state showcase this year.

Senior Abby Marcukaitis was victorious in the 100 back at the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate for the third year in a row.

Jānis Dzirkalis (100 back, 200 free) and Blake Rowe (100 free, 100 fly) won heats in both of their individual events. Dzirkalis and LePine also teamed up with classmates Jonah Lee and Biko Hooper-Haviland to help the freshmen win the 200 medley relay and the men’s class relay challenge.

The Boilermakers are back in action Saturday, Oct. 18 when they host Missouri for the lone co-ed dual meet of the home season. Action begins at 11 a.m. ET.

Soccer Drops 1-0 Decisions to Illinois, Nebraskaa

Purdue soccer put together one of its best attacking performances of the Big Ten season but came up just short, falling 1–0 on the road to Illinois on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12_ at Demirjian Park. Purdue drops to 5-8-3 on the season and 2-5-1 in Big Ten play.

The Boilermakers fired 14 shots, including seven on target, and held a narrow edge in possession (52%), but an early goal from the Illini proved decisive. The Boilers drop to 5-8-3 on the season and 2-5-1 in conference.

Illinois scored in the ninth minute when Cayla Jackson finished for her sixth goal of the season. From there, Purdue controlled much of the match, generating 11 first-half shots and keeping pressure on Illini goalkeeper Izzy Lee, who finished with seven saves.

Cherry Yu and Megan Santa Cruz led the Purdue attack, combining for eight shots and five on goal. Chiara Singarella and Emilia Deppe each added key chances, but could not find the finish.

Goalkeeper Emily Edwards kept Purdue in the match, recording six saves—including four in the second half—as the Boilermakers limited Illinois to just 10 total shots. The back line, anchored by Zoe CuneioMargaux Chauvetand Lauren Adam, held firm to keep the match tight after the early breakthrough.

Three days earlier came up short on the road Thursday night, falling 1–0 at Nebraska.

The Boilermakers held the majority of possession and matched the Huskers in corner kicks, but a late second-half goal proved the difference.

The teams played an even first half, with both sides trading corners and testing each other in midfield. Purdue generated four first-half corners and a pair of shots from Margaux Chauvet and Emilia Deppe, but neither found the target. Goalkeeper Emily Edwards made two saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless at the break.

After halftime, the Boilermakers looked to push forward with Megan Santa CruzAngelina Thoreson, and Chiara Singarella each creating opportunities in the attacking third, but Purdue was unable to record a shot on goal.

Nebraska finally broke through in the 83rd minute when Reagan Raabe converted a cross from Carson Bohonek and Ella Rudney, giving the Huskers the lone goal.

Edwards finished with five saves in total, keeping Purdue within striking distance throughout the match.

The Boilermakers return home Thursday at 7 p.m. (Oct. 16) to face Penn State and on Sunday versus Northwestern (6 p.m.) in the Hammer Down Cancer event.
