Recap: Purdue throttled in Seattle, falls to Washington 49-13.

Purdue was throttled in its lone West coast trip of the season on Saturday night, falling to Washington 49-13 in Seattle. The Boilermakers saw their program-worst losing skid in Big Ten games extended to 17 games with the latest defeat and have now dropped nine-straight games on the heels of a 2-0 start to the Barry Odom era.

Purdue had a pair of opportunities to score early in the game after stops by Mike Scherer’s defense, with two drives on the Washington half of the field. The second of which ended in a turnover on downs, and it was Washington who took advantage.
The Huskies marched down the field thanks to a 43-yard connection between Demond Williams and Omari Evans, setting up a charge to the end zone, which was capped off by a one-yard score by Adam Mohammed.
Purdue would have two turnovers on downs and an interception from Ryan Browne, and Washington scored a touchdown off of each Boilermaker miscue.
That initial touchdown drive sparked a run of four straight possessions that Washington scored on, while the Boilermakers sputtered offensively. Demond Williams was precise in the pocket, going 11-13 for 132 yards through the air, but it was the ground game that proved to be lethal to the Purdue defense.
Even without star tailback Jonah Coleman, Washington rushed for 139 yards and four scores in the first half. Jordan Washington had three carries for 84 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown burst. Backup running back Adam Mohammed also had 50 yards and three touchdowns on 15 touches.
The Purdue defense struggled, but Josh Henson’s offense failed to get anything going in the first half, while switching quarterbacks. Ryan Browne started the game, but he and Malachi Singleton each had opportunities throughout the game.
The offense under Browne’s watch amassed 24 yards in three drives, while Singleton’s version of the offense mustered 69 yards in the first half. The tandem combined for 5-12 passing for 51 yards and an interception, which was added to Ryan Browne’s tally.
While the ground game was the source of the scores for Washington in the first half, quarterback Demond Williams joined the party after the break. The standout sophomore had a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter, including a 61-yard bomb to Audric Harris, which helped extend the Huskies’ lead to 42-3. Williams finished the day with a mark of 16-19 passing for 257 yards and the two aforementioned touchdown passes.
Purdue would hold off a second shutout attempt of the season by getting its offense moving in garbage time, facing a 35-0 deficit. Spencer Porath, a model of consistency for the Boilermakers this season, hit a pair of field goals. The latter of which marked a new career-long of 51 yards, besting his previous long of 50. The sophomore is now 14-15 on the season.

Malachi Singleton orchestrated three scoring drives in the second half, as he became the primarily signal caller of Josh Henson and the Purdue offense. The third scoring drive was Purdue’s first touchdown of the night, coming via a nine-yard strike to EJ Horton. That score would make it a 42-13 game late in the fourth quarter.
Singleton finished the game 16-27 passing for 150 yards and a score, while Browne was just 1-6 for 17 yards and an interception. For the first time this season, it was Singleton who took the bulk of the reps under center, as Browne had struggled across his previous four appearances. Singleton’s go-to target emerged as Nitro Tuggle, who led the Boilermakers in receiving with 57 yards on three catches.
Despite the late success, Purdue’s offense struggled mightily for a fifth-straight game, being held under 20 points for the fifth time this season. Across the last five games, the Boilermakers have averaged less than 13.0 points per game and came into the day sitting in 16th in scoring offense in the conference.
Purdue reached 100 yards on the ground on 33 carries, as Antonio Harris and company were held under 3.0 yards per carry. The longest run of the day came on a sweep to wide receiver EJ Horton.
The Huskies amassed 508 yards of offense in the waxing, marking the fourth time Purdue’s defense has allowed 500+ yards in a game this season. Jordan Washington and Adam Mohammed headlined a ground game that rushed for 214 yards and five scores. Purdue has now given up 40+ points three times this season and twice in Big Ten play.
Purdue will have an off week after the long travel to Seattle and will close out the season against No. 2 Indiana in Ross-Ade Stadium on Black Friday.
