INDIANAPOLIS — A quick look back at the coaches Matt Painter has coached against during his prior 14 Big Dance appearances.

2007 (9 seed)

New Orleans
8 Arizona (W, 72-63) — The legendary Lute Olson retired the following October and passed away at the age of 85 in 2020.
1 Florida (L, 74-67) — Billy Donovan went on to win the national title with the Gators before eventually departing for the NBA, first the Oklahoma City Thunder and currently the Chicago Bulls.

2008 (6)

Washington, D.C.
11 Baylor (W, 90-79) — This was the very beginning of Scott Drew‘s run with the Bears. He remains in Waco, where he’s won a national title and put together a Hall of Fame résumé. This ’07 game was Baylor’s first NCAA appearance since 1988 and the first of many, it turned out.
3 Xavier (L, 85-78) — Sean Miller left X for Arizona years later, but was let go amidst accusations of recruiting impropriety. He’s now back at Xavier.

2009 (5)

Portland
12 Northern Iowa (W, 61-56) — Ben Jacobsen is still UNI’s coach, all these years later. He first took the head coaching position in 2006, but has been part of the program since ’01.
4 Washington (W, 76-74) — Lorenzo Romar‘s 15-year run at Washington ended when he was fired in 2017. After a stint on the staff at Arizona, he got the Pepperdine job, but was let go at the end of this season.

Glendale
1 Connecticut (L, 72-60) — Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun retired in 2012.

2010 (4*)

Spokane
13 Siena (W, 72-64) — Fran McCaffrey took the Iowa job following this tournament and has coached Hawkeyes ever since.
4 Texas A&M (W, 63-61, OT) — Aggies coach Mark Turgeon soon joined McCaffery in the Big Ten, taking the Maryland job in 2011. He was fired in-season two seasons ago and is not currently coaching.

Houston
1 Duke (L, 70-57) — One of the greatest college basketball coaches ever, Mike Krzyzewski retired from coaching in 2022.

2011 (3)

Chicago
14 Saint Peter’s (W, 65-43) — John Dunne has been coaching Marist since 2018.
11 VCU (L, 94-76) — Shaka Smart took the Texas job years later, leaving Austin in 2021 for Marquette, where he’s doing quite well.

2012 (10)

Omaha
7 St. Mary’s (W, 72-69) — Randy Bennett has been the Gaels’ coach since 2001, with no end in sight.
2 Kansas (L, 63-60) — Hall-of-Famer Bill Self has coached the Jayhawks since 2003. He has more than 800 career wins from stints at four different schools and has won two national titles.

2015 (9)

8 Cincinnati (L, 67-66, OT) — This is complicated. Mick Cronin was the Bearcats’ head coach at the time, but was on medical leave for this season, turning the team over in the meantime to assistant Larry Davis. Cronin is now the head coach at UCLA; Davis left Cincinnati on his own accord in 2018 after being accused of assault. He was most recently seen in coaching at a now-shuttered prep school in North Carolina.

2016 (5)

12 Arkansas-Little Rock (L, 85-83, 2OT) — Chris Beard soon left Little Rock for UNLV, only to jilt them for Texas Tech, which he then left for Texas, from which he was fired. He’s now at Ole Miss.

2017 (4)

Milwaukee
13 Vermont (W, 80-70) — John Becker has been one of the better mid-major coaches who doesn’t get a lot of publicity. Becker has coached the school since 2011
5 Iowa State (W, 80-76) — Steve Prohm got fired after the 2021 season and currently coaches Murray State.

Kansas City
1 Kansas (L, 98-66) — Self again.

2018 (2)

Detroit
15 Cal State-Fullerton (W, 74-48) — Dedrique Taylor just completed his 11th season with the Titans.
I10 Butler (W, 76-73) — LaVall Jordan was new on the job during this particular season. He didn’t make it, replaced by Thad Matta two seasons ago. Jordan is not coaching currently. Jordan has done some media work.

Boston
3 Texas Tech (L, 78-65) — Beard again.

2019 (3)

Hartford
14 Old Dominion (W, 61-48) — Jeff Jones retired amidst significant health issues in 2024. He won 560 games in his career.
6 Villanova (W, 87-61) — Hall of Famer Jay Wright retired two seasons ago, seemingly still in his prime. He’s doing TV and doing very well at it.

Louisville
2 Tennessee (W, 99-94, OT) — Rick Barnes remains in Knoxville, where he again has one of the best teams in the country.
1 Virginia (L, 80-75) — A sure-fire Hall of Famer still leading the Cavaliers, Tony Bennett won the national title the weekend following this remarkable game.

2021 (4)

Indianapolis Bubble
13 North Texas (L, 78-69, OT) — Grant McCasland parlayed his success into the Texas Tech job, which he took over this season.

2022 (3)

Milwaukee
14 Yale (W, 78-56) — James Jones is Yale’s all-time wins leader and one of the longest-tenured coaches in America. He just took the school back to the NCAA Tournament and stunned Auburn.
6 Texas (W, 81-71) — This concluded Chris Beard‘s only full season at Texas. He was fired the following January after being accused of domestic violence. Mississippi hired him months later.

Philadelphia
15 Saint Peter’s (L, 67-64) — Shaheen Holloway left for his alma mater, Seton Hall, following the tournament.

2023 (1)
