Three and Out: Purdue's loss to Syracuse

Four first-half turnovers, defensive struggles and a littany of penalties spelled doom for Purdue Saturday night in Ross-Ade Stadium, as the Boilermakers fell to visiting Syracuse 35-20.
Hudson Card threw for a touchdown and ran for another, but three lost fumbles and one batted ball interception came off his hand, those four turnovers being Purdue’s first four of the season to date. Two of them occurred in scoring territory, denying Purdue’s offense a chance to keep pace with an Orange offense that minced Purdue’s defense to the tune of 272 rushing yards and very Fresno State-like success on third-and-long.
With 4:56 left, after missing a PAT, Purdue turned the ball over on downs, Card throwing incomplete for Deion Burks.
Purdue was bit by 10 penalties for 116 yards.
Syracuse QB Garrett Shrader ran for 195 yards and four touchdowns, putting the game away with a 35-yard scoring run in the game’s final minutes. Given a chance to score a fifth in garbage time, Shrader took a knee.

Three takeaways …
• Purdue just had very few answers for QB Garrett Shrader’s mobility and savvy running read option. Whether that was over-aggressivess, a lack of discipline, preparation or whatever, it was probably a combination of all of the above. Those returning Boilermakers who played Saturday night saw Shrader last season at Syracuse.
• Against a ‘Cuse defense that kept everything in front of it, Purdue really needed to be able to run the ball. It could not, totaling just 66 net rushing yards. Devin Mockobee managed just 31 yards and fumbled three times in the second half alone, though Purdue retained possession each time.
After a nice game at Virginia Tech, Purdue’s offensive line took a step backward against Syracuse.
• On the bright side, Abdur-Rahmaan Yaseen was terrific, the receiver finishing with nine balls for 105 yards. He’s been a rock for a Purdue offense that did move the chains Saturday, but undercut itself with turnovers.
